Whale crochet pattern — six pieces, 35 rounds written out

A free whale crochet pattern for a small amigurumi about 5 cm across and 7 cm long, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in two colours over about four and a half hours. Six pieces come off the hook and only one of them has any shaping in it: the body opens to thirty stitches in five rounds, holds thirty for seven, and closes again in four, while the flukes, fins and belly patch are three or four rounds each. All 35 rounds are written out below across the six pieces, each carrying the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 35 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

  • 4 render matches the pattern — no image has been compared against its own prompt, so a render showing a piece the rounds do not make would not be caught here. Nothing has counted how many do.
  • 6a recognisability — provenance.recognisability is empty in every pattern, so there is no feature list to check the parts against.
Why it is rated Easy

Easy: one piece carries all the shaping and the rest are three or four rounds each. The only care needed is keeping the seven straight rounds even before the decreases start.

Five rounds out to thirty stitches, seven straight rounds, then four rounds back in to six. The straight section sits in the middle of the sixteen, so the whale is widest across its belly rather than at the nose. There is no separate head on this whale, so the eyes go into the body wall. Set them while the round is still thirty stitches wide, which it is from round 5 to round 12; round 15 brings the opening down to twelve and round 16 closes it to six.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the little whale?

Six pieces from four lists: the page mirrors the flukes and the fins, writing those lists out a second time. The page writes out 35 rounds in all, the longest piece being the body at 16 and the shortest the belly patch at 3.

How much yarn will the little whale take?

Two colours, all weight 3, and the pattern asks for blue: 1 skein; off-white: scraps.

What hook will the little whale need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm (E) hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~5 cm across, ~7 cm long; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the little whale take to crochet?

About four and a half hours. That is 35 rounds across six pieces, coming to 378 single crochet, 42 increases and 36 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
