Unicorn crochet pattern: 89 rounds across nine pieces

A free unicorn crochet pattern for a white pony about 18 cm tall to the tip of the horn, worked in four colours on a 3.0 mm hook over roughly five hours. The horn is the piece that decides it: four stitches in the ring, then two increases on rounds 3, 5, 7 and 9 and nothing at all on the even rounds, so it climbs to twelve slowly instead of flaring into a cone. Eighty-nine rounds cover the nine pieces, each with the count it ends on, and the mane is knotted on at the end rather than crocheted.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 89 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Medium

Nine pieces, four legs that have to be sewn level or the pony leans, and a back-loop round on each leg where gold changes to white while the count holds at twelve.

Optional

Pins for holding the legs in place before sewing
Blush and a soft brush for the cheeks
A comb for the mane

Gauge and finished size

the last check before you cast on
Tension
Tight enough that no stuffing shows between the stitches. The head is the piece to watch: it is the largest stuffed round in the pattern, so if the filling grins through anywhere it will be there — drop half a hook size and work it again.
Finished size
~18 cm tall standing, measured to the tip of the horn
The mane is fringe rather than crochet, so any leftover pastel works for it and a fluffier yarn fills the neck with fewer knots. Keep the horn in a smooth yarn or the stacked increases stop reading as a spiral.

Nine notes on the unicorn

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Everything is worked in a continuous spiral. Nothing is joined and nothing is turned, so keep a marker in the first stitch of each round.
03Round 5 of each leg is worked in the back loops only, on the round where gold changes to white. That gives a crisp hoof line. It is still a plain round of 12 sc — twelve stitches in, twelve stitches out — so the count screen shows it as any other round.
04The mane and tail are not crocheted. Cut 20 cm lengths of pastel pink and pastel lilac, fold each in half, and knot them on like fringe: hook the folded loop through a stitch, pass the two ends through the loop, pull tight. Work a line of about 20 knots from between the ears down the back of the head and neck, alternating the two pastels, and a bunch of about 14 at the back of the body for the tail. Trim once everything is knotted on.
05Put the safety eyes in at round 9 of the head, about 9 stitches apart, while the head is still open. After round 12 you cannot reach the backs of them.
06Stuff the hooves before round 6 of each leg closes them in. Stuff the head and body firmly as you work the last decrease rounds.
07The horn is left unstuffed for the first four rounds — it is too narrow for a fingerful of stuffing. Push a little in from round 5 onward with the end of a hook.
08Increases in the horn stack in the same column on purpose, so the horn leans into a soft spiral rather than standing perfectly straight.
09For a child under three, embroider the eyes in black yarn instead of using safety eyes.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the unicorn?

Nine pieces from six lists: the page mirrors the ears, the front legs and the back legs, writing those lists out a second time. The page writes out 89 rounds in all, the longest piece being the body at 18 and the shortest the ears at 3.

How much yarn will the unicorn take?

Four colours, all weight 3 (light worsted), and the pattern asks for white: 1 skein (about 90 m); gold: scraps (about 15 m); pastel pink: scraps (about 12 m); pastel lilac: scraps (about 12 m).

What hook will the unicorn need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.0 mm hook, US D/3. Finished, it comes out ~18 cm tall standing, measured to the tip of the horn; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the unicorn take to crochet?

About five hours. That is 89 rounds across nine pieces, coming to 1,072 single crochet, 104 increases and 66 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
