Piglet crochet pattern, seven pieces and 51 rounds

A free piglet crochet pattern for a sitting piglet about 11 cm tall with a head about 5.5 cm across, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in four colours over about two and a half hours. Round 15 is the round that matters: worked in back loops only, it leaves a ridge of free front loops all the way round the twelve-stitch neck, and that ridge is what keeps head and body from reading as one blob in a piece that never stops. All 51 rounds are written out across the seven pieces, each round carrying the count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 51 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

  • 6a recognisability — provenance.recognisability is empty in every pattern, so there is no feature list to check the parts against.
Why it is rated Easy

Easy in stitch terms, sc, inc and dec throughout, with one thing to get right: the head has to be stuffed firmly through rounds 12 to 14, because nothing reaches back through a twelve-stitch neck.

Gauge and finished size

the last check before you cast on
Tension
Not critical. Work tightly enough that no stuffing shows between stitches; a looser hand gives a bigger piglet on the same counts.
Finished size
~11 cm / 4.5 in tall sitting, with a head about 5.5 cm across
A 4 mm hook with the same worsted gives a larger piglet off the same 51 rounds. Going much finer shrinks the neck ridge, which is the detail doing the work, so keep the hook at or above 3.5 mm.

How to make the piglet, piece by piece

Thirteen notes on the piglet

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Every piece is worked in a continuous spiral. Nothing is joined and nothing is turned, so mark the first stitch of each round and carry the marker up with you.
03Head and body are one piece. Rounds 1 to 11 are the head, rounds 12 to 14 pull in to a twelve-stitch neck, and rounds 15 to 22 open back out into the body and close.
04Round 15 is worked in back loops only. That leaves a ridge of free front loops all the way round the neck, which is what stops the head and body reading as one blob. The stitch count does not change: round 15 is still twelve stitches in and eighteen out, the same as an ordinary increase round. Work it as normal single crochet if you would rather keep the line soft.
05Stuff the head firmly through rounds 12 to 14 while you can still reach it, and keep the neck itself thin. Stuff the body during rounds 20 and 21 and add a little more before you close round 22.
06The body ends on a rounded base, so the piglet leans rather than sits square. A small pouch of poly pellets pushed in before round 22 settles it, or press the base flat with your thumb once it is stuffed.
07The snout is stuffed very lightly — a pinch, enough to sit proud — and sewn flat and centred across rounds 8 to 10 of the head.
08The nostrils are two short charcoal stitches worked side by side on the snout, a stitch apart, once it is sewn on.
09The eyes are charcoal embroidery, five or six stitches worked over each other into a small filled oval, set at round 7 and about 8 stitches apart. Safety eyes go in at the same place, before the decreases start, if you prefer them.
10The ears are not stuffed. Pinch each one flat, curve the open edge into a shallow arc, and sew it to the head at rounds 4 and 5, one on each side of the crown, about 10 stitches apart.
11The arms are stuffed only at the cream end. Sew them to the sides of the body at rounds 17 and 18, level with each other, with the trotters pointing down and slightly forward.
12The tail is a four-stitch cord. Slide a folded pipe cleaner in as you work past round 5, close the last round over it, and wind the finished cord around a pencil to set the curl. Sew the open end to the back of the body at round 19.
13A pig's tail is a spiral, and a spiral needs shaping this pattern cannot count. The wire does that job instead, and it holds the curl better than yarn alone would.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the piglet?

Seven pieces from five lists: the page mirrors the ears and the arms, writing those lists out a second time. The page writes out 51 rounds in all, the longest piece being the head and body at 22 and the shortest the snout at 3.

How much yarn will the piglet take?

Four colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for bubblegum pink: 1 skein (about 40 g used); blush: scraps; cream: scraps; charcoal: scraps.

What hook will the piglet need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~11 cm / 4.5 in tall sitting, with a head about 5.5 cm across; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the piglet take to crochet?

About two and a half hours. That is 51 rounds across seven pieces, coming to 514 single crochet, 54 increases and 42 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
