Birthday cake crochet pattern — eight pieces, 47 rounds written out

About 15 cm across the frosting and about 14 cm tall to the flame tips: a free birthday cake crochet pattern, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in six colours. The cake is one piece from base to rim, with round 9 in back loops only turning the flat base into a wall, and the frosting is a separate disc carried one round further — 72 stitches against the cake's 64 — so its edge has somewhere to lap over the side. All 47 rounds are written out below across four lists that make eight pieces, and every round shows the stitch count it finishes on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 47 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated High

High: twelve rounds of 64 stitches with no shaping to count against, a frosting disc eight stitches wider than the cake it is sewn to, and three candles that have to stand plumb.

Tools

6 you probably own, 2 to buy

You likely have

Tapestry needle
Scissors
Stitch markers
Pins
Measuring tape
A chopstick or dowel for stuffing

You need to buy

Polyester fiberfill stuffing (~90 g)
A cardboard or plastic-canvas disc, 12 cm across, for the base

Optional

Three pipe cleaners, one inside each candle, to keep them upright
A locking stitch marker in a contrast colour for the round start

Gauge and finished size

the last check before you cast on
Tension
Worked tight enough that the stuffing does not show between stitches. Exact gauge is not critical; a looser hand gives a larger cake and eats more yarn.
Finished size
~15 cm across the frosting, ~14 cm tall to the flame tips
In DK on a 3.5 mm hook every count still works, but the candles stay six stitches round whatever the yarn, and at that size changing colour twice in a six-stitch round gets fiddly.

Nine notes on the birthday cake with candles

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Everything is worked in a continuous spiral. Mark the first stitch of every round and move the marker up as you go — a 64-stitch round is easy to lose count in.
03Round 9 of the cake body is worked in back loops only; that ridge is what turns the flat base into a wall and makes the cake sit level on a table.
04The frosting is a separate disc worked one round wider than the cake, 72 stitches against the cake's 64. Sew its round 8 to the top edge of the cake and leave the pink round 9 free, so the rim laps over the side the way poured icing does.
05The candles and the flames are each one part made three times. Work all three candles before you sew any of them, so you can match the stripes.
06Cut the cardboard disc to sit inside the base before you stuff. It is what keeps the bottom flat once the cake has weight in it.
07Stuff the cake firmly and evenly as the wall grows, pushing the stuffing out to the edge so the side stays straight rather than barrelling.
08Sew the candles standing plumb. Pin all three first, look at the cake from the side at eye level, and adjust before a single stitch goes in — a candle leaning by a few degrees is the thing an eye lands on.
09Leave a long tail on every piece. Every one of them is sewn to something.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the birthday cake with candles?

Four written lists making eight pieces in all, working the candles three times and the flames three times. The page writes out 47 rounds in all, the longest piece being the cake at 20 and the shortest the flames at 6.

How much yarn will the birthday cake with candles take?

Six colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for sponge yellow: 1 skein (about 90 m); strawberry pink: small amount (about 30 m); buttercream cream: small amount (about 35 m); candle white: scraps; candy stripe red: scraps; flame orange: scraps.

What hook will the birthday cake with candles need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~15 cm across the frosting, ~14 cm tall to the flame tips; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the birthday cake with candles take to crochet?

About five hours. That is 47 rounds on the page, from four written lists that make eight pieces, coming to 1,482 single crochet, 132 increases and 6 decreases once every piece is worked, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
