Crochet bucket bag pattern — three pieces, 227 rounds written out

About 19.5 cm across the base and 24 cm tall, with a 60 cm strap loop: a free crochet bucket bag pattern, worked on a 6.0 mm hook in three colours over roughly seven and a half hours. Rounds 32 to 35 are the only two-colour rounds in the bag — 32 and 33 run four tan then four cream around all 64 stitches, and 34 and 35 reverse the pairing, which offsets the blocks and turns what would have been eight stripes into a chequer. The base and body, the strap and the cord are written out separately, 39 rounds, 78 and 110, each carrying the count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 227 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated High

High: 227 rounds, two colours carried across four of them, and a strap that is picked up from the rim and sewn back down at the point opposite where it started.

Tension
Worked firmly, tighter than the yarn label suggests. Gauge is not critical to the look, but a loose hand gives a wider, softer bag and eats more yarn — if the wall will not stand up empty, drop a hook size.

~19.5 cm across the base and ~24 cm tall, with a 60 cm strap loop

Eight notes on the bucket bag

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02The whole bag is plain single crochet worked in a continuous spiral. The fabric comes out smooth and solid — no ribbing, no openwork, no gaps anywhere in it.
03Round 9 of the base and body is worked in the back loop only. It is still 64 single crochet, one stitch in and one stitch out, so the app counts it as an ordinary round. The back loops are what give the base a crisp fold up into the wall.
04Rounds 32 to 35 carry tan and cream across the same round, four stitches at a time, for a checked band. Carry the colour you are not working along the top of the previous round and cover it as you go.
05There are no eyelet holes. The drawstring weaves in and out between the stitches of the last round, which is why that round is left plain.
06The strap begins on eight stitches picked up from the rim and finishes sewn to the rim directly opposite, so it hangs as a closed loop with no free end. Count the rim into quarters before you start it — 32 stitches between the two ends.
07The drawstring is simulated as 110 one-stitch rounds. It is a cord, counted the only way this app can count one; work it to about 85 cm and adjust to how you like to knot it.
08Yarn and hook are a recommendation rather than a rule: chunky cotton on a 6.0 mm hook holds a bag shape well without a lining.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How is the colour worked into the bucket bag?

Inside the round, not at the start of it: four of the 227 rounds carry a colour run, all of them in the base and body. Each of those rounds gives the run in stitches: round 32 of the base and body is sixteen runs of colour, beginning four tan, then four cream, and so on round the piece.

How much yarn will the bucket bag take?

Three colours, all weight 5 (bulky), and the pattern asks for tan: ~110 m (about two 50 g balls); cocoa: ~50 m (about one 50 g ball); cream: ~15 m (scraps, or a part ball).

What hook will the bucket bag need, and what is the finished size?

A 6.0 mm hook, US J/10. Finished, it comes out ~19.5 cm across the base and ~24 cm tall, with a 60 cm strap loop; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the bucket bag take to crochet?

About seven and a half hours. That is 227 rounds across three pieces, coming to 2,894 single crochet and 56 increases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
