Free crochet drawstring pouch pattern — 115 rounds across two pieces

Crochet drawstring pouch free pattern for a bag about 23 cm around and 13 cm tall, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in three colours over about three hours. Nothing is built into the wall to take the cord — no eyelets, no skipped stitches — because the cord is threaded under and over the stitches of round 25 with a needle once the pouch is off the hook, which is why the last four rounds can stay plain. The body's 25 rounds and the cord's 90 are written out separately, each round carrying the count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 115 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Easy

Easy: one back-loop round turns the base into a wall and after that nothing changes for eighteen rounds. The cord is 90 rounds of four stitches.

Worked firmly in plain single crochet. A looser hand gives a wider, softer pouch and eats more yarn; if you can see between the stitches when you hold the wall up, drop half a hook size.

Six rounds out to a flat 36-stitch disc, one round through the back loops to fold the edge upward, then eighteen rounds of the same 36 stitches to the top.If you wash it, do it by hand in cool water. Squeeze the water out rather than wringing it, and stand it over a jar to dry, so the wall dries round rather than creased flat.

When this piece is doneThe body is done.Set it on the table and look at the base. It should sit flat and the wall should stand without help — that is the back-loop round doing its work. Weave in the ends before you thread the cord, because the top round gets crowded afterwards.

Seven notes on the drawstring pouch

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02The whole pouch is plain single crochet worked in a continuous spiral. The fabric comes out smooth all over — there is no ribbing, no openwork and no gaps anywhere in it.
03Round 7 is worked in back loops only. It is still 36 single crochet in and 36 single crochet out, so the count does not change; the free front loops leave a ridge, and the wall stands up from that ridge instead of spreading outward.
04There are no eyelet holes. Finish the pouch first, then thread the cord onto the tapestry needle and weave it in and out of the stitches of round 25, all the way around, coming back out beside where you went in.
05The drawstring is worked as a slim four-stitch tube, 90 rounds long, which comes out around 46 cm — about 25 cm of that is taken up going around the pouch, leaving roughly 10 cm at each end to knot and pull.
06Both colour changes happen at the start of a round, never partway through one. Carry the resting yarn up the inside of the wall, or cut it and weave the tail in.
07Round 1 of the cord is a magic ring of 4. Pull it closed tightly — that end gets buried inside the knot later, so it does not have to be pretty.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the drawstring pouch?

Two separate pieces, one written list each. The page writes out 115 rounds in all, the longest piece being the drawstring at 90 and the shortest the body at 25.

How much yarn will the drawstring pouch take?

Three colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for oatmeal: 1 skein (~40 g); rust: ~10 g, leftovers are plenty; cocoa: ~30 g.

What hook will the drawstring pouch need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~11.5 cm across laid flat (23 cm around) and ~13 cm tall; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the drawstring pouch take to crochet?

About three hours. That is 115 rounds across two pieces, coming to 1,110 single crochet and 30 increases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
