Free crochet leg warmers pattern — two tubes, 122 rounds written out

Crochet leg warmers free pattern for a pair about 32 cm around and 35 cm long, worked on a 4.5 mm hook in three colours over roughly nine hours. Nothing shapes either tube — 44 stitches on round 1 and 44 on round 61 — so all of the work goes into ten colour joins per warmer: cocoa for the first six rounds and the last six, oatmeal between, and four three-round rust bands starting at rounds 15, 26, 37 and 48. Both warmers are written out in full, 61 rounds each, every round stating the count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 122 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Easy

Easy: the stitch never changes, but 122 rounds and twenty colour joins take keeping in order, and a band worked a round out shows against the other leg.

You likely have

Tapestry needle
Scissors
Locking stitch markers
Measuring tape

You need to buy

A second skein of the oatmeal — one will not cover both warmers
Row counter, or a notes app; sixty-one identical rounds are easy to lose your place in

Optional

1 cm wide elastic, ~50 cm, run through the top band if the warmers slide down
Blocking mat and rustproof pins, if you work in wool and want the bands to lie flat

Gauge and finished size

Tension
Gauge is the whole of the fit here, and the tube never changes width, so there is no correcting it later. Work twenty rounds, hold the tube against the widest part of your calf, and change hook before you go on.
Finished size
~32 cm around and ~35 cm long — fits an average adult calf

Both the same. A ring of 44 stitches, then sixty-one rounds straight up the leg, changing colour where the bands fall. Each warmer carries ten colour joins, so the ends add up. Weave each one in along the inside as soon as you make it and the finishing takes minutes instead of an evening.

Seven notes on the leg warmers

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02The fabric is plain single crochet worked in a continuous spiral. It comes out smooth and even over the whole tube — there is no ribbing anywhere in this pattern, and no raised texture.
03Each warmer opens on a foundation ring of 44 rather than a magic ring, so the tube is at full width from round 1 and never needs increasing.
04Colour changes happen at the start of a round, so every join sits in one column. Put that column at the back of the leg.
05The tube runs straight at 44 stitches the whole way up, with no taper at the ankle.
06Single crochet gives very little across its width. Measure the widest part of your calf, and check the tube against it around round 20 — a hook a half size up or down is the easiest correction.
07Both warmers are worked identically. There is no left and no right until you put them on, and nothing is sewn to anything.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the leg warmers?

Two pieces from a single list: the page mirrors the warmers, writing that list out a second time. The page writes out 122 rounds in all, the longest piece being the warmers at 61.

How much yarn will the leg warmers take?

Three colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for oatmeal: 2 skeins (~430 m / 200 g across the pair); rust: 1 skein (~140 m / 65 g across the pair); cocoa: 1 skein (~140 m / 65 g across the pair).

What hook will the leg warmers need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.5 mm hook, US 7. Finished, it comes out ~32 cm around and ~35 cm long — fits an average adult calf; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the leg warmers take to crochet?

About nine hours. That is 122 rounds across two pieces, coming to 5,368 single crochet, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
