Crochet phone holder pattern: a ginger cat in eight pieces, 69 rounds

A free crochet phone holder pattern shaped as a ginger cat, measuring ~10 cm across the base and ~11 cm tall with the back upright, holding a phone at roughly a 20 degree lean, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in four colours over about three and a half hours. The face is tapestry colourwork carried inside the round rather than embroidered on afterwards — charcoal eyes across rounds 4 and 5 of the back support, a cream muzzle across rounds 6 to 8 — and the base is filled with plastic pellets at round 18, while the opening is still wide, then closed over them in the last two rounds. That weight is the whole reason the stand does not tip when a phone leans on it. All 69 rounds are written out below across eight pieces, each one carrying the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 69 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Medium

Medium for the colourwork: eyes and muzzle are carried inside rounds 4 to 8 of the back support, and that tube has to be pressed flat with the face centred before anything is sewn.

You need to buy

Poly-pellets or dry rice (~120 g) for the base
Polyester stuffing (~30 g)
A small drawstring bag to hold the pellets, if your stitches are loose

Optional

A stitch marker in a contrast colour for the round start
A scrap of non-slip shelf liner for the underside of the base

Gauge and finished size

the last check before you cast on
Tension
Tight enough that no pellet can find a way between stitches. Gauge is not critical to the look, but a loose base leaks.
Finished size
~10 cm across the base and ~11 cm tall with the back upright, holding a phone at roughly a 20 degree lean
Any worsted or aran yarn works on the 4.0 mm hook. The weight in the base is what makes the stand hold a phone, so if you fill it with rice or dried beans instead of plastic pellets, keep the finished stand away from water.

Nine notes on the cat phone stand

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Every piece is smooth single crochet worked in a continuous spiral — nothing to join, nothing to turn over, and no ribbing or open work anywhere in the fabric.
03The back support and the front lip are worked as tubes and then pressed flat, which gives a firm double-thick panel without leaving the round.
04The face is tapestry colourwork carried within the round: charcoal eyes on rounds 4 and 5, a cream muzzle on rounds 6 to 8. Carry the resting colour loosely behind the stitches so the panel stays flat.
05The nose, mouth and paw pads are embroidered on afterwards with a tapestry needle.
06Weighting matters more than anything else here. Pour the pellets in around round 18 of the base, settle them flat, then finish the closing rounds. A light base tips forward under a phone.
07The lean is set when you sew. Pin the back support to the base so it stands about 20 degrees off vertical, stand a phone against it, and adjust before a single stitch goes in.
08The front lip is folded forward and sewn along the front of the base so it catches the phone's bottom edge. The paws sit on top of the lip, so the cat reads as holding the phone.
09The tail curls around the right side of the base and is sewn down along its length.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How is the colour worked into the cat phone stand?

Inside the round, not at the start of it: nine of the 69 rounds carry a colour run, across three of its eight pieces. Each of those rounds gives the run in stitches: round 3 of the ears is six blush, then six ginger.

How much yarn will the cat phone stand take?

Four colours, all weight 4, and the pattern asks for ginger: 1 skein (~85 g); cream: scraps (~10 g); charcoal: scraps (~5 g); blush: scraps (~5 g).

What hook will the cat phone stand need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~10 cm across the base and ~11 cm tall with the back upright, holding a phone at roughly a 20 degree lean; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the cat phone stand take to crochet?

About three and a half hours. That is 69 rounds across eight pieces, coming to 1,080 single crochet, 102 increases and 48 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
