Crochet cowl pattern — one piece, 42 rounds of 96 stitches

A free crochet cowl pattern for a loop about 61 cm around and 21 cm deep, loose enough to pull on over the head, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in two colours over roughly five hours. The count never moves — 96 single crochet on round 1 and 96 on round 42 — so the only thing that changes anywhere in the piece is the colour, rust for the first six rounds, oatmeal for the thirty in the middle, rust again for the last six. All 42 rounds are set out one at a time, each stating the 96 it consumes and the 96 it produces.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 42 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: one stitch, one count, and no shaping anywhere in the piece. The only thing to keep track of is where a spiral of 96 begins and ends.

Gauge and finished size

the last check before you cast on
Tension
Worked at everyday tension rather than tight amigurumi tension. Gauge is what sets the circumference here, so work the first few rounds, pass the ring over your head, and change hook before you carry on — too wide, drop a size; too tight, go up one.
Finished size
~61 cm around and ~21 cm deep — a loose single-wrap cowl for an adult, wide enough to pull on over the head
The 96 stitches are fixed, so gauge and hook set the circumference on their own. A heavier yarn or a larger hook gives a cowl that is both wider and deeper over the same 42 rounds; a lighter one gives a closer wrap.

Seven notes on the cowl

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral with no join and no turning, so mark the first stitch of every round and move the marker up as you go.
03Round 1 is worked into a foundation ring of 96 stitches rather than a magic ring, which is why the pattern opens with no shaping.
04Rounds 7 and 37 change colour at the round boundary. Fasten off the old colour, join the new one, and weave the ends in along the inside of the tube.
05Optional edge finish: work rounds 1 and 42 in back loops only. That is still 96 sc in and 96 sc out, so the count is unchanged — BLO only leaves a raised line the edge can roll against.
06The fabric is smooth single crochet all the way up. It has no ribbing, and it is not meant to; the drape comes from the loose tension and the wool.
07Nothing is stuffed, shaped, or sewn. When the last round is done, fasten off and weave the tail in.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the cowl be made with a different hook or yarn?

The 96 stitches are fixed, so gauge and hook set the circumference on their own. A heavier yarn or a larger hook gives a cowl that is both wider and deeper over the same 42 rounds; a lighter one gives a closer wrap.

How much yarn will the cowl take?

Two colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for oatmeal: 1 skein (~130 m / 65 g used); rust: 1 skein (~55 m / 28 g used).

What hook will the cowl need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~61 cm around and ~21 cm deep — a loose single-wrap cowl for an adult, wide enough to pull on over the head; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the cowl take to crochet?

About five hours. That is 42 rounds of the cowl, worked as one piece, coming to 4,032 single crochet, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
