Baby booties crochet pattern — two feet, 38 rounds written out

A pair of baby booties with a sole about 9 cm long, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in three colours over roughly two and a half hours. The sole grows from 24 stitches to 36 in four rounds, then round 5 goes into the back loops only in sage, and that single ridge is the whole join between a flat sole and a standing wall; rounds 12 and 13 take the count back down to 28 across the instep so the foot closes over the toes. Both booties are written out in full, 19 rounds each, and every round shows the count it finishes on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 38 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

  • 4 render matches the pattern — no image has been compared against its own prompt, so a render showing a piece the rounds do not make would not be caught here. Nothing has counted how many do.
  • 6a recognisability — provenance.recognisability is empty in every pattern, so there is no feature list to check the parts against.
Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: single crochet throughout, and the only shaping is four increases a round across the sole and four decreases on each of rounds 12 and 13.

Gauge is the size here, and the size is the whole point. Work the four sole rounds, lay the sole against the foot it is for, and change hook before you start the wall. A looser hand gives a bootie for a bigger foot.

Two the same. An oval sole grows for four rounds, the wall stands up on a sage ridge, the foot runs straight, and then the instep pulls the top in.Hand wash cool and dry flat. Try one on the foot after round 13 — if it looks short, add a straight round of 28 before the cuff and add the same round to the second bootie.

Seven notes on the baby booties

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02The fabric is plain single crochet worked in a continuous spiral. It comes out smooth and dense on both faces — there is no ribbing anywhere in these booties, and no openwork. What stretch they have comes from the yarn and from working the cuff at an easy tension, not from the stitch.
03Round 5 is worked in back loops only. It is still 36 single crochet, one stitch in and one stitch out, so the counter reads it as an ordinary round — the free front loops it leaves behind make the ridge that stands the wall up off the sole.
04Chain 11 to begin. Round 1 puts 9 sc along one side of the chain, 3 sc into the end chain, 9 sc back along the underside and 3 sc into the first chain, which comes to 24 stitches around an oval. That is why the sole has no magic ring.
05Nothing is mirrored and nothing is sewn. Both booties are worked identically, and the bend that lifts the top over the instep comes from the four decreases in each of rounds 12 and 13.
06The two colour changes happen at round boundaries: finish round 4 in cream and start round 5 in sage, then go back to cream for round 6 and over to blush for round 14.
07No buttons, ties or hardware anywhere, and nothing that can come loose into a mouth. The sizes on this page are computed from the stitch counts; nobody has made or fitted a pair, so measure the sole against the foot it is for before you work the wall.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the baby booties?

Two pieces from a single list: the page mirrors the booties, writing that list out a second time. The page writes out 38 rounds in all, the longest piece being the booties at 19.

How much yarn will the baby booties take?

Three colours, all weight 3 (light worsted), and the pattern asks for cream: 1 ball (about 55 m used for the pair); blush: small amount (about 25 m for the pair); soft sage: scraps (about 5 m for the pair).

What hook will the baby booties need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~18 cm around the ankle, sole ~9 cm long, ~7.5 cm tall — computed from the stitch counts, not fitted; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the baby booties take to crochet?

About two and a half hours. That is 38 rounds across two pieces, coming to 1,136 single crochet, 24 increases and 16 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
