Crochet basket pattern: 39 rounds across three pieces, every count written out

This is a free crochet basket pattern. The finished basket is ~16 cm across the top and ~14 cm tall, with each handle standing about 4 cm proud of the side, worked on a 6.5 mm hook in four colours over about two and a half hours. Round 7 is the round that does the work: 48 single crochet in and 48 out, exactly like the rounds either side of it, but taken through back loops only, so the ridge it leaves turns the flat base up into a wall that stands on its own. All 39 rounds are written out below across three pieces, each one carrying the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 39 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Medium

Medium for the handles: each is worked outward from live rim stitches, so both start points have to be marked on round 23 before the yarn is cut.

You likely have

Tapestry needle
Scissors
Measuring tape
Row counter

You need to buy

Locking stitch markers ×4 — one for the round start, two to hold the handle positions through 16 rounds of wall, one spare
A 6.5 mm hook, if your set stops at 6.0 mm

Optional

A cardboard or plastic-canvas disc cut to the base, if you want the bottom to stay perfectly flat under weight
Fabric stiffener, for a wall that stands harder than the yarn alone will hold

Gauge and finished size

Tension
Structural rather than cosmetic: nothing is stuffed, so the fabric is the only thing standing the wall up. If yours flops, drop a hook size rather than pulling the stitches tighter — a hand fighting the hook gives an uneven wall as well as a tired wrist.
Finished size
~16 cm across the top and ~14 cm tall, with each handle standing about 4 cm proud of the side
Chunky cotton and t-shirt yarn of the same weight both work here; t-shirt yarn gives a stiffer wall. Anything lighter than CYC 5 will not hold the sides up, so drop a hook size and expect a smaller basket.

Six rounds of pure increase make the bottom. Round 7 goes into the back loops only, and the disc stands up. Everything after that is the wall.Keep the last stitch on the hook. The left handle carries straight on from here.

When this piece is doneThe basket is built. Before you fasten off, count 24 stitches along the rim from your round start and mark that stitch, then mark the stitch 24 further on. Those two marks are where the handles begin, and they are much easier to find now than after the yarn is cut.

Two the same, each a narrow tube of six stitches worked outward from the rim. Eight rounds is enough to arch over and come back down.Leave about 30 cm of charcoal at the end of each handle. That tail is what sews it down.

When this piece is doneBoth handles done.Sew the open end down six stitches along the rim from where the handle started, matching the six live stitches to six rim stitches one for one. Work the second handle from the mark opposite and give it the same arch — hold the basket at arm's length and check the two look level before you cut the tail.

Eight notes on the storage basket

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral throughout. Nothing is joined and nothing is turned.
03Round 7 is worked in back loops only; that ridge is what turns the flat base up into a wall and lets the basket sit level. The stitch count does not change — it is 48 single crochet in and 48 out, exactly like the rounds either side of it.
04Both handles are worked outward from live stitches on round 23 rather than from a magic ring, so neither has a round 1 in the usual sense. Mark the two starting points before you begin the wall: they sit 24 stitches apart, exactly opposite each other on the 48-stitch rim.
05The open end of each handle is sewn down to the rim six stitches along from where it started, using a long tail and a tapestry needle. Crocheting that join through both layers would eat twice the stitches it makes, which is not a move this format counts, so it is a sewn join.
06Change colour on the last pull-through of the round before, so the new colour starts clean. In a spiral each change leaves a small step at the round boundary — keep every change on the same side of the basket and the steps stack into one tidy line instead of wandering.
07Nothing is stuffed. The wall stands on two things and nothing else: the tightness of the fabric, and the back-loop ridge at the base that turns the floor into a corner.
08Yarn and hook here are suggestions. The stitch counts hold at any scale — the same 48-stitch rim in DK on a 3.5 mm hook gives a desk-tidy about 9 cm across.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the storage basket?

Three pieces from two lists: the page mirrors the handles, writing that list out a second time. The page writes out 39 rounds in all, the longest piece being the base and sides at 23 and the shortest the handles at 8.

How much yarn will the storage basket take?

Four colours, all weight 5 (bulky), and the pattern asks for natural ecru: 1 large skein (~120 m); charcoal: ~40 m; mustard: ~20 m; rust: ~20 m.

What hook will the storage basket need, and what is the finished size?

A 6.5 mm hook, US K/10.5. Finished, it comes out ~16 cm across the top and ~14 cm tall, with each handle standing about 4 cm proud of the side; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the storage basket take to crochet?

About two and a half hours. That is 39 rounds across three pieces, coming to 1,000 single crochet and 40 increases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
