Crochet beanie pattern — one piece, 34 rounds from the crown down

A free crochet beanie pattern for a smooth adult hat about 56 cm around, worked on a 5.0 mm hook in one colour over about three hours. Round 12 is the only round that decides anything — it is where the increases stop and the flat disc becomes a tube, and because the count never moves again, the 72 stitches you have at that point are the circumference of the finished hat. All 34 rounds are written out from the crown down, each carrying the count it ends on, and the fabric is plain single crochet rather than ribbing.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 34 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

  • 4 render matches the pattern — no image has been compared against its own prompt, so a render showing a piece the rounds do not make would not be caught here. Nothing has counted how many do.
  • 6a recognisability — provenance.recognisability is empty in every pattern, so there is no feature list to check the parts against.
Why it is rated Easy

Easy: twelve increase rounds and twenty-two plain ones, with no decreases at all. The one thing to get right is stopping the increases at 72.

Twelve increase rounds take a magic ring of six out to seventy-two stitches, and then twenty-two rounds of seventy-two run straight down to the brim. The count stops growing at 72 and never moves again. If the hat sits short on the head, add straight rounds of 72 before you fasten off; there is no shaping at the brim to redo.

When this piece is doneThe hat is done.Fasten off and weave the tail down the inside of the last round. Set the hat crown up on the table first — the disc should stay flat all the way to round 12 and only turn down after it, and a crown that domes early means the increases came too fast.

Three notes on the simple beanie

Read them
01Worked in plain single crochet throughout, so the fabric is smooth with the faint spiral a continuous round leaves. It is not ribbed: vertical ribs need rows or post stitches, and neither is something this app can count.
02Worked from the crown down, so you can try it on from about round twenty.
03The brim is the last few rounds. Stop when it sits where you want it.

Three questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Is there a gauge to match for the simple beanie?

No stitches-to-the-centimetre figure to match, because nobody has swatched this one; what the pattern asks for instead is a technique: worth checking early — a hat that is out by a little is out by a lot. Work the crown to the end of round 12, where the increases stop, and lay it on the head it is for before you start down the sides. Nothing changes width after that round.

What hook will the simple beanie need, and what is the finished size?

A 5.0 mm hook, US H/8. Finished, it comes out ~56 cm around — an adult head; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the simple beanie take to crochet?

About three hours. That is 34 rounds of the simple beanie, worked as one piece, coming to 1,920 single crochet and 66 increases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
