Crochet bucket hat pattern — two pieces, 33 rounds written out

A free crochet bucket hat pattern for a hat about 58 cm around and 10 cm deep with a 5 cm brim, worked on a 6.0 mm hook in four colours over about four hours. Ten increase rounds make a flat 60-stitch crown, round 11 goes into the back loops only to turn the corner, and then the brim adds six stitches on rounds 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 with a plain round between each — that alternation is what makes it slope out instead of ruffling. Crown and brim are written out separately, 23 rounds and 10, each round carrying the count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 33 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Easy

Easy: 60 stitches is a long round to lose your place in, and round 11 has to go into the back loops only or the crown never turns the corner into a side.

Tension
Worked at a relaxed tension, not the tight hand amigurumi wants — the fabric should have a little give. The crown disc is the whole of the fit, so stop at the end of round 10 and lay it on the head it is for before you start down the sides.
Finished size
~58 cm around, an average adult head. About 10 cm deep with a 5 cm brim.

Ten rounds of increases make a flat disc, then the work turns and runs straight down. Rounds 12 and 18 are where the colour changes.Work round 11 into the back loops only. The count stays at 60; the loops you leave behind become the ridge at the edge of the crown.

Straight on from the last side round, with six increases on every other round. The alternating straight rounds are what make the brim slope instead of ruffle. If you wash it, wash it cool and dry it flat over a bowl about the size of the crown rather than hanging it up by the brim.

Seven notes on the bucket hat

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in one continuous spiral from the top of the crown to the edge of the brim. Nothing is sewn and nothing is turned — mark the first stitch of each round and keep going.
03Round 11 is worked in back loops only. The stitch count does not change — 60 stitches in, 60 stitches out — but the free front loops leave a crisp ridge where the flat crown turns down into the side.
04The crown disc sets the size. Ten increase rounds give about 58 cm around, which fits an average adult. Stop the disc at round 9 (54 stitches) for a smaller adult or a teenager, or at round 8 (48 stitches) for a child, then hold that count through the sides and start the brim increases from there.
05The colour bands change at round boundaries. In a spiral the change steps up by one stitch where it lands, which is normal and settles out of sight once the hat is on.
06The yarn and hook are suggestions. Anything worsted will work — a smaller hook makes a smaller hat, so measure the crown before you commit to the sides.
07Damp the brim and dry it over a bowl if it wants to flip up.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the bucket hat?

Two separate pieces, one written list each. The page writes out 33 rounds in all, the longest piece being the crown and sides at 23 and the shortest the brim at 10.

How much yarn will the bucket hat take?

Four colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for sage green: ~40 m; cream: ~35 m; terracotta: ~35 m; denim blue: ~75 m, about half a 100 g ball.

What hook will the bucket hat need, and what is the finished size?

A 6.0 mm hook, US J/10. Finished, it comes out ~58 cm around, an average adult head. About 10 cm deep with a 5 cm brim.; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the bucket hat take to crochet?

About four hours. That is 33 rounds across two pieces, coming to 1,722 single crochet and 84 increases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
