Crochet mittens pattern — four pieces, 60 rounds written out

A free crochet mittens pattern for a pair about 23 cm around the hand and 14 cm from the cuff edge to the closed tip, worked on a 4.5 mm hook in three colours over about three and a half hours. The thumb is an afterthought — six of round 11's 32 stitches go over a length of waste yarn, and pulling that yarn out leaves a slot that is already the right size and already bound, which is also the only thing that makes one mitten a left and the other a right. Two mittens of 24 rounds and two thumbs of 6 are written out separately, each round carrying the count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 60 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Medium

Medium: round 11 has to go over waste yarn at the correct side for each hand, and the thumb is sewn around a slot rather than shaped as you go.

Gauge matters more here than on a toy, because the mitten has to fit. Work the cuff, try it over the hand it is for at round 8, and change hook size before you go on — the count never moves again after that.

Two the same. Eight rounds of cream for the cuff, twelve for the hand, then four that pull the top closed.Wool wants a cool hand wash and a flat dry. Try each mitten on before you close the top — adding a round at 32 takes a minute, and taking two back takes the evening.

A short tube of ten stitches, six rounds tall. Nothing shapes it — the slot it sits in does that.Leave a long tail at the open end. You will sew the whole way around the slot with it, and a join here takes more yarn than it looks like it should.

Nine notes on the mittens

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral in plain single crochet. The fabric comes out smooth and evenly stretchy — there is no ribbing anywhere in this pattern, and nothing to join and nothing to turn.
03Start each mitten with a ring of 32 chains rather than a magic ring, so the cuff edge stays open and stretchy. The thumb starts the same way on 10 chains.
04The thumb opening is made with waste yarn, not by skipping stitches. On round 11, work 6 stitches with the scrap yarn, slide those 6 stitches back onto the hook and work them again in heather, then carry on around. The round still counts its full 32 stitches, which is why the count never dips.
05Both mittens are worked from exactly the same rounds. The hands are told apart only by where the waste yarn sits: put it over stitches 2 to 7 of round 11 on the first mitten and over stitches 26 to 31 on the second, so the two thumbs end up facing each other.
06When a mitten is finished, pull the waste yarn out. The 6 stitches let go and open into a slot about 4 cm wide.
07The thumb is a straight tube. Close its far end by running the tail through the last round and drawing it up, then ease the open end into the slot and sew it down all the way around.
08For a longer mitten, add straight rounds before round 21. Each extra round adds about 0.6 cm.
09The stripe is two whole rounds of mustard, changed at the round boundary, so no yarn is carried inside the hand.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the mittens?

Four pieces from two lists: the page mirrors the mittens and the thumbs, writing those lists out a second time. The page writes out 60 rounds in all, the longest piece being the mittens at 24 and the shortest the thumbs at 6.

How much yarn will the mittens take?

Three colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for cream: about 15 g; heather: about 25 g; mustard: scraps, about 5 g.

What hook will the mittens need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.5 mm hook, US 7. Finished, it comes out ~23 cm around the hand, ~14 cm from the cuff edge to the closed tip; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the mittens take to crochet?

About three and a half hours. That is 60 rounds across four pieces, coming to 1,448 single crochet and 56 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
