Cat coaster crochet pattern: six rounds, one flat piece

A free cat coaster crochet pattern for a flat disc about 10 cm across the face and 12 cm including the two ear points, worked in worsted cotton on a 5.0 mm hook in about forty-five minutes. Rounds 1 to 5 are an ordinary flat circle out to forty stitches; round 6 adds only six more, three of them together and three again ten stitches later, so the long plain stretches pull the rim in while the two clusters push out into ears. Six rounds cover the whole coaster, each with the count it ends on, and the face is embroidered afterwards.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 6 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Six rounds of plain single crochet on a flat disc. The one thing to watch is round 6, where the two increase clusters have to land ten stitches apart or the ears sit crooked.

Tension
Firm but not tight — a coaster wants to lie flat, not curl into a bowl. Look at the disc from the side at the end of round 5: if it cups, go up half a hook size rather than loosening your hand, and if the rim ruffles, come down one.
Finished size
~10 cm across the face, ~12 cm including the two ear points
The disc will curl until it is blocked, whatever the yarn. Damp it, pin it flat and let it dry before it meets a mug. A 4.0 mm hook with a lighter cotton gives a disc nearer 8 cm across the face.

Five rounds of a plain flat circle, then one round that pushes two ears out of the rim. Lay the work down on the table every round or two — a flat disc tells you immediately if the count has drifted.Cotton takes a hot mug and a cold wash. Wash it flat, reshape it while it is damp, and dry it away from the radiator.

Damp the disc and pin it flat to dry before it ever meets a mug.

Eight notes on the cat face coaster

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral. Mark the first stitch of every round — on a flat disc a lost round boundary shows up straight away as a kink in the edge.
03Rounds 1 to 5 are a plain flat disc on a magic ring of 8: eight new stitches every round, and the increase moves one stitch further along each round so the circle stays round instead of going hexagonal.
04Round 6 is the ear round. Three increases worked into three neighbouring stitches, ten plain stitches, three more increases, then twenty-four plain stitches back to the start. The two clusters end up about a third of the way around from each other, which puts them at ten o'clock and two o'clock.
05Round 6 adds six stitches where a flat round would add eight, so the long plain stretches pull the rim in a little while the two clusters push out. That contrast is the whole reason the ears read as ears.
06Change to cream on the last yarn-over of round 5, so round 6 starts clean with no half-orange stitch at the join.
07The face is embroidered once the crochet is finished: two charcoal ovals a little above centre, a small blush pink triangle between them for the nose, a short charcoal line down from the nose into a shallow curve, and three charcoal whiskers each side.
08The disc will curl until it is blocked. Damp it, pin it flat, and let it dry before you glue on the backing.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the cat face coaster be made with a different hook or yarn?

The disc will curl until it is blocked, whatever the yarn. Damp it, pin it flat and let it dry before it meets a mug. A 4.0 mm hook with a lighter cotton gives a disc nearer 8 cm across the face.

How much yarn will the cat face coaster take?

Four colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for marmalade orange: one 50 g ball makes several; cream: small amount; charcoal: scraps; blush pink: scraps.

What hook will the cat face coaster need, and what is the finished size?

A 5.0 mm hook, US H/8. Finished, it comes out ~10 cm across the face, ~12 cm including the two ear points; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the cat face coaster take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 6 rounds of the cat face coaster, worked as one piece, coming to 90 single crochet and 38 increases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
