Christmas bauble crochet pattern — one piece, 12 counted rounds

A free Christmas bauble crochet pattern for a ball about 5 cm across, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in four colours, about forty-five minutes' work. Twelve rounds: four opening out to 24 stitches, five straight through the middle, three closing back in. The colour changes fall on rounds 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11, which lays six bands of two rounds each up the sides of a plain sphere — cream, cranberry, forest, cream, cranberry, gold — and the loop it hangs by is chained off the same tail that closes the top. All 12 rounds are written out below in one piece, with the number of stitches it leaves you on printed beside it.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 12 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

  • 6a recognisability — provenance.recognisability is empty in every pattern, so there is no feature list to check the parts against.
Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: one increase pattern, one decrease pattern and five straight rounds between them. Every colour change lands at the start of a round, so nothing is counted mid-round.

A ball in twelve rounds. Four rounds opening out, five straight through the middle, three closing in — and a colour change every second round on the way.Acrylic is the forgiving fibre for something that spends eleven months of the year in a box. If it comes out flattened, a little more stuffing pushed in through a gap in the top rounds fills it out again.

Seven notes on the christmas bauble

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral, so there is nothing to join and nothing to turn.
03The fabric is plain single crochet throughout and comes out smooth. The bands are colour changes made at the start of a round — no raised, ribbed or openwork stitch is worked anywhere in the ball.
04Six bands, two rounds each: cream, cranberry, forest, cream, cranberry, gold. Change yarn on the last pull-through of the previous round's final stitch so each band starts cleanly.
05Stuff firmly while the opening is still wide, around round 10. Once it is down to twelve stitches the stuffing goes in a pinch at a time.
06The hanging loop is worked from the finishing tail: ch 20, then sl st back down the chain and fasten off into the top of the ball. It is a finishing step rather than a counted round, so it lives in this note and not in the round list.
07One piece. Nothing is sewn to anything, and there is one tail to weave in.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Is there a gauge to match for the christmas bauble?

No stitches-to-the-centimetre figure to match, because nobody has swatched this one; what the pattern asks for instead is a technique: tight enough that the stuffing does not show between the stitches. Exact gauge is not critical — a looser hand gives a slightly larger bauble.

How much yarn will the christmas bauble take?

Four colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for cream: about 4 m; cranberry red: about 5 m; forest green: about 3 m; gold: about 3 m, the loop included.

What hook will the christmas bauble need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~5 cm across, not counting the hanging loop; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the christmas bauble take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 12 rounds of the christmas bauble, worked as one piece, coming to 162 single crochet, 18 increases and 18 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
