Crochet mini pumpkin pattern — one piece, 16 counted rounds

A free crochet mini pumpkin pattern for a pumpkin about 6 cm across, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in two colours, about forty-five minutes' work. Six of the sixteen rounds — 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 — go into back loops only. That changes no count anywhere, and what it leaves behind is six raised rings circling the sides. Round 13 closes the orange to six stitches and the green stem carries straight on from those same six, which keeps the whole pumpkin one piece with nothing sewn to anything. All 16 rounds are written out below in one piece, each carrying the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 16 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: sixteen rounds of plain single crochet, one increase pattern out and one decrease pattern back, and the only thing to remember is which rounds take the back loop.

Nine notes on the mini pumpkin

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral from the base up. Nothing is joined and nothing is turned, so mark the first stitch of every round and move the marker up as you go.
03The fabric is plain, smooth single crochet the whole way — one loop of the hook, sixteen rounds, no other stitch anywhere in it.
04Rounds 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 are worked in back loops only. That is a prose instruction, not a different stitch: each of those rounds takes in the same number of stitches it puts out, so the counts on the screen never change. Only the loop your hook goes under changes.
05What back loops only gives you is a raised ring circling the body at each of those six rounds — horizontal ridges stacked up the sides, not the vertical segments a real pumpkin has. The shape, the orange and the green stem are what read as a pumpkin here.
06If you do want vertical segments, they come from a needle rather than the hook. Once the pumpkin is stuffed and closed, take a long length of orange through the base, up over the outside and back through the base six times at even spacings, pulling each wrap snug. The pattern is finished without this.
07Stuff the body firmly through rounds 11 and 12, and press a little more in before round 13 closes it to six stitches. An understuffed pumpkin loses the round sides the increases were shaped for.
08Do not close round 13. Change to green and keep going — the stem grows straight out of those last six stitches, which keeps the pumpkin one piece with nothing to sew on.
09After round 16, cut the green, thread the tail through the front loop of all six stitches and pull it closed. Weave the end down inside the stem.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the mini pumpkin be made with a different hook or yarn?

The vertical segments a real pumpkin has come from a needle, not the hook: once it is closed, take a long orange strand through the base and over the outside six times at even spacings, pulling each wrap snug. The pattern is finished without this.

How much yarn will the mini pumpkin take?

Two colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for pumpkin orange: 1 skein, well under half of it (about 15 g); stem green: scraps, about 2 m.

What hook will the mini pumpkin need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~6 cm across and ~5 cm tall once stuffed, counting the stem; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the mini pumpkin take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 16 rounds of the mini pumpkin, worked as one piece, coming to 216 single crochet, 24 increases and 24 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
