Crochet stuffed heart pattern — three pieces, 11 rounds written out

This is a free crochet stuffed heart pattern for a heart about 5 cm across, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in a single colour, about forty-five minutes' work. Two lists make three pieces: the lobe is worked twice, the second one stays on the hook, and round 5 is crocheted around both of them at once — twelve stitches into the second lobe, twelve into the first — so the two are joined by being worked into rather than sewn. From there the heart drops three stitches every round with no straight rounds between, and that slow taper is the entire shape. All 11 rounds are written out below across three pieces, with the number of stitches it leaves you on printed beside it.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 11 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Easy

Easy apart from one round. Round 5 is worked around both lobes at once, and they have to be held side by side with their open ends level while you do it.

Eight notes on the stuffed heart

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Every stitch here is a plain single crochet worked in a continuous spiral, so the fabric comes out smooth and even all over — there is no ribbing, no texture and no openwork anywhere in this piece.
03The two lobes are listed as one part worked twice, then the Heart part carries on across both of them at once. Nothing is sewn together: the lobes are joined by crocheting into them, and the piece is one continuous fabric from there down to the point.
04Fasten off the first lobe and leave a short tail inside it. Keep the yarn attached to the second lobe — that is the working yarn for the whole rest of the heart.
05Round 5 is the join: hold the two lobes side by side with their open ends level, then work 12 sc around the second lobe and 12 sc around the first, ending back where you started. You are now working one ring of 24.
06The taper is deliberately slow, 3 stitches a round with no straight rounds in between. Taking 6 a round instead pulls the fabric into a puckered blob rather than a point.
07Stuff as you go, a little at a time, and add the last of it through the 12-stitch round before the opening gets too small for your fingers.
08The dent between the lobes deepens if you run a length of yarn from the front of the join to the back and pull it snug before weaving it in.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the stuffed heart?

Two written lists making three pieces in all, working the lobes twice. The page writes out 11 rounds in all, the longest piece being the heart at 7 and the shortest the lobes at 4.

Can the stuffed heart be made with a different hook or yarn?

Taking six stitches a round out instead of three finishes faster and pulls the fabric into a puckered blob rather than a point. If you want a deeper dent between the lobes, run a length of yarn front to back across the join and pull it snug before weaving in.

What hook will the stuffed heart need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~5 cm across and ~5 cm tall, small enough to close a hand around; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the stuffed heart take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 11 rounds on the page, from two written lists that make three pieces, coming to 147 single crochet, 12 increases and 18 decreases once every piece is worked, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
