Flamingo crochet pattern — eight pieces, 118 rounds written out

A flamingo about 21 cm tall standing, the body about 8 cm long, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in five colours over roughly four and a half hours. Two shapes in this bird cannot be crocheted in a spiral — the S of the neck and the backward bend of the ankles — so both are made with wire threaded through pieces that are worked dead straight: sixteen rounds of ten stitches for the neck, eighteen rounds of six for each leg. This flamingo crochet pattern writes out all 118 rounds across the eight pieces, each one carrying the count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 118 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Medium

Medium: eight pieces, two mirrored pairs that have to match, and three pieces that change colour part way through. The bird stands on two six-stitch legs.

Optional

Row counter
A small bag of plastic pellets for the base of the body, so the bird stands without leaning
A contrast stitch marker for the start of each round

Gauge and finished size

the last check before you cast on
Tension
Gauge is not critical, but the fabric has to be dense enough that the stuffing does not show between stitches. A looser hand gives you a taller flamingo on the same counts.
Finished size
~21 cm tall standing, the body about 8 cm long
Worsted on a 4 mm hook gives a taller bird on the same counts, but the legs get no thicker — the wire is doing the standing either way.

How to make the flamingo, piece by piece

A teardrop. The increases are spread out with a straight round between each one, so the tail end comes out long instead of round.Keep the five straight rounds at 30 flat and even — that band is where both legs and both wings get sewn on.

Eight notes on the flamingo

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Everything is worked in a continuous spiral. Nothing is joined and nothing is turned, so mark the first stitch of every round and move the marker up as you go.
03Round 3 of each leg is worked in back loops only. That single ridge is what makes the charcoal foot read as a foot instead of a dark stripe.
04The head and neck are one piece. Work the head first, then the long 10-stitch tube — stuff the head firmly before the neck narrows, because you cannot reach back into it afterwards.
05A flamingo's neck curves in an S and its ankles bend backwards. Neither of those can be crocheted in continuous rounds, so the shapes are made with wire: thread a 22 cm pipe cleaner up the neck before you close it, and a 14 cm length into each leg.
06The bill is a straight cone here. Stuff it firmly and sew it on tilted downwards — the angle at the seam is what gives you the famous kink.
07Legs sew to the underside of the body across rounds 10 to 14, where the sides run straight. Wings sit on the sides over rounds 9 to 13, black tips pointing back towards the tail. The tail goes on the narrow point at round 2, and the neck joins the wide closed end.
08The bird is top-heavy on two 6-stitch legs. Weight the base of the body with pellets, or let it lean against something — a flamingo standing on one leg is a pose, not a promise.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the flamingo?

Eight pieces from six lists: the page mirrors the wings and the legs, writing those lists out a second time. The page writes out 118 rounds in all, the longest piece being the head and neck at 26 and the shortest the bill at 6.

How much yarn will the flamingo take?

Five colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for bubblegum pink: 1 skein (about 100 g); hot pink: small amount (about 15 g); charcoal: scraps; white: scraps; black: scraps.

What hook will the flamingo need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~21 cm tall standing, the body about 8 cm long; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the flamingo take to crochet?

About four and a half hours. That is 118 rounds across eight pieces, coming to 1,150 single crochet, 72 increases and 58 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
