Peacock crochet pattern — 98 rounds, nine parts, fifteen pieces

A peacock about 16 cm tall with the tail fan roughly 25 cm across, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in six colours. The eyespot is the project — rounds 13 to 17 of every feather carry gold, royal blue and black inside a round that is otherwise emerald, worked stitch by stitch rather than sewn on afterwards, and all seven feathers repeat those five rounds identically. All 98 rounds are written out below across nine parts, and each one shows the count it finishes on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 98 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

  • 4 render matches the pattern — no image has been compared against its own prompt, so a render showing a piece the rounds do not make would not be caught here. Nothing has counted how many do.
  • 6a recognisability — provenance.recognisability is empty in every pattern, so there is no feature list to check the parts against.
Why it is rated High

High because the fan is seven of the same thing: rounds 13 to 17 of each feather are worked stitch by stitch in as many as four colours, and the eyespots only read as a set if all seven land level.

Tension
Tight enough that stuffing does not show between the stitches, and tight enough that the carried colours of the eyespot do not grin through the emerald. A looser hand gives a larger bird and a wider fan; the proportions hold either way.
Finished size
~16 cm / 6 in tall, with the tail fan about 25 cm / 10 in across
Any smooth worsted works. What the pattern needs is six colours that stay apart at arm's length — the eyespot is ten stitches wide at most, so gold against blue against black has to carry it, not the size.

Nine notes on the peacock

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Everything is worked in a continuous spiral. Mark the first stitch of each round and move the marker as you go.
03Body and head are one piece: teal from round 1, royal blue from round 19 where the neck starts. Stuff the body firmly through rounds 15 to 18 while the opening is still wide, and stuff the head during rounds 33 to 35.
04Safety eyes go in between rounds 29 and 30, about seven stitches apart, before the head closes.
05Round 30 of the body and round 4 of each wing sit better worked in back loops only. That does not change the stitch count — the round is still worked one stitch into one stitch, and it stays 24 sc and 18 sc respectively.
06The eyespot on each feather is per-stitch colourwork: carry the colour you are not using along the back of the round and keep the tension even. All seven feathers repeat rounds 13 to 17 identically, so the fan reads as one set.
07Feathers, wings and crest are left unstuffed and pressed flat before sewing.
08Simulation note: the crest is a flat teal leaf with five gold tips embroidered along its top edge, standing in for the five wire-thin plumes a real peacock carries. The feet are small bronze pads with three toe lines embroidered on each.
09Sew the seven feathers evenly around the back of the fan base, tips pointing outward, then sew the whole fan behind the body at rounds 8 to 12.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How is the colour worked into the peacock?

Inside the round, not at the start of it: five of the 98 rounds carry a colour run, all of them in the tail feathers. Each of those rounds gives the run in stitches: round 13 of the tail feathers is four emerald, then ten gold, then four emerald.

How much yarn will the peacock take?

Six colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for peacock teal: 1 skein (~50 g); royal blue: ~35 g; emerald: ~45 g; gold: ~20 g; bronze: ~15 g; black: scraps.

What hook will the peacock need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~16 cm / 6 in tall, with the tail fan about 25 cm / 10 in across; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the peacock take to crochet?

About seven and a half hours. That is 98 rounds on the page, from nine written lists that make fifteen pieces, coming to 2,436 single crochet, 207 increases and 156 decreases once every piece is worked, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
