Four leaf clover crochet pattern — 25 rounds in two pieces

About 8 cm across the four lobes and about 14 cm counting the stem: a free crochet pattern four leaf clover makers can work in one piece plus a stem, worked on a 3.0 mm hook in three greens, about an hour and a half of work. The lobes are not four separate pieces: from round 5 the disc increases and decreases inside the same round — twelve increases spread over the lobes against one decrease at each of the four notches — so the outline runs in and out along one unbroken edge. Below you get all 25 rounds of the two pieces, each with the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 25 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

  • 6a recognisability — provenance.recognisability is empty in every pattern, so there is no feature list to check the parts against.
Why it is rated Easy

Easy: plain single crochet, but rounds 5 to 7 put increases and decreases in one round, and the four notches have to stay a quarter of the round apart.

Four plain rounds of flat disc, then the shape arrives all at once: increases where a lobe should swell, a decrease where the edge should bite back in.Count the four notches as you go — the lobes only look even if the decreases sit a quarter of the round apart.

Six notes on the four-leaf clover

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Plain single crochet throughout, worked in a continuous spiral. The fabric is smooth and solid — no ribbing, no openwork, no holes anywhere in it.
03The four lobes are shaped rather than worked separately: a cluster of increases pushes each lobe outward, and one decrease at each of the four notches pulls the edge back in. The outline runs in and out along a single unbroken edge, with no gap between one lobe and the next.
04Flat and unstuffed. The piece cups slightly as it comes off the hook; damp it, pin it out flat and let it dry, and it settles.
05The stem starts on six stitches picked up from the rim between two lobes, so it has no magic ring and nothing is sewn on. Work it firmly and it stands up on its own.
06The pale band across each lobe is surface embroidery in cream, worked over the finished fabric. It is not part of the stitch count, and the clover reads fine without it.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the four-leaf clover?

Two separate pieces, one written list each. The page writes out 25 rounds in all, the longest piece being the stem at 16 and the shortest the clover at 9.

How much yarn will the four-leaf clover take?

Three colours, all weight 3 (light worsted), and the pattern asks for shamrock green: about 5 g; grass green: about 5 g; cream: scraps.

What hook will the four-leaf clover need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.0 mm hook, US D/3. Finished, it comes out ~8 cm across the four lobes, ~14 cm long counting the stem; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the four-leaf clover take to crochet?

About one and a half hours. That is 25 rounds across two pieces, coming to 284 single crochet, 56 increases and 16 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
