String of pearls crochet pattern — 37 pieces from three lists

This is a free string of pearls crochet pattern for a hanging plant in a pot about 6.5 cm across the rim and 4.5 cm tall, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in four colours over about four hours. Three lists make thirty-seven pieces: the pearl is written once and worked thirty-five times at three rounds each, and the strands are not crocheted at all — every bead keeps a 15 cm tail that is knotted hard against itself and threaded through the magic-ring hole of the next one. All 23 rounds are written out below across those three lists, and each one shows the stitch count it finishes on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 23 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Medium

Medium for the repetition and the assembly: thirty-five identical three-round beads, then eight strands knotted bead to bead and threaded through the soil disc before the disc goes into the pot.

6 you probably own, 2 to buy

You likely have

Tapestry needle
Scissors
Stitch markers
Measuring tape
Pins
A chopstick or long tweezers for stuffing the pearls

You need to buy

Polyester stuffing (~20 g)
Dry rice or a few small pebbles (~40 g) to weight the pot

Optional

Cotton cord or ribbon (~1.5 m) if you want to hang the pot rather than stand it
A stitch marker in a contrast colour for the round start
A small bowl to count the finished pearls into

Gauge and finished size

the last check before you cast on
Tension
Gauge is not critical — a looser hand gives a larger pot and larger beads together. What matters is that the fabric stays dense enough that stuffing cannot show through a pearl, and a pearl is only six rounds, so there is nowhere for a loose stitch to hide.
Finished size
~6.5 cm across the pot rim and ~4.5 cm tall, with the longest strand of pearls hanging ~20 cm below it
A 4 mm hook and worsted gives larger pearls and a wider pot on the same counts. Keep the knot spacing near 1.5 cm either way — that spacing is what sets how far the strands trail.

Eleven notes on the string of pearls hanging plant

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral. Nothing is joined and nothing is worked back the other way, so mark the first stitch of every round.
03Every stitch in this pattern is a plain single crochet. The fabric comes out smooth and solid throughout — there is no openwork, no lace and no gap anywhere in it. The plant reads as a plant from the shape of the beads and the colours, not from any stitch texture.
04Round 6 of the pot is worked in back loops only. It is still thirty single crochet — thirty stitches in, thirty stitches out — so the counts are unchanged. Working under the back loop alone leaves the front loops of round 5 standing as a ridge, and that ridge is the corner between the pot's base and its side.
05Thirty-five pearls, every one identical. The pattern lists the pearl once and the app repeats it thirty-five times.
06The pearls hang on eight strands: two strands of three, three strands of four, two strands of five and one strand of six. Thirty-five beads in total.
07The strands are not crocheted. Each pearl keeps a tail about 15 cm long; knot it three times close against the bead, thread the tail through the magic-ring hole of the next pearl and pull it snug. Spacing the knots about 1.5 cm apart gives the longest strand roughly 20 cm of drop.
08Knot all eight strands through the soil disc before the disc goes into the pot. Then push the disc into a shallow dome, weight the pot with rice or pebbles under the stuffing, and sew the dome to the inside of the rim all the way around.
09The trailing stem of a real string of pearls is a fine cord this format cannot work as stitches, so the stems here are made from the pearls' own tails instead.
10The pot's colour changes to sage at the start of round 15, on the round boundary, so the flared rim reads as a glazed edge.
11Finished size is computed from the stitch counts at the stated hook and yarn, not measured from a made sample.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the string of pearls hanging plant?

Three written lists making 37 pieces in all, working the pearls 35 times. The page writes out 23 rounds in all, the longest piece being the pot at 15 and the shortest the pearls at 3.

How much yarn will the string of pearls hanging plant take?

Four colours, all weight 3 (light worsted), and the pattern asks for grass green: 1 ball, about 100 m used across all 35 pearls and their strands; terracotta: about 40 m; sage: scraps, about 5 m; cocoa brown: scraps, about 12 m.

What hook will the string of pearls hanging plant need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm (E) hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~6.5 cm across the pot rim and ~4.5 cm tall, with the longest strand of pearls hanging ~20 cm below it; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the string of pearls hanging plant take to crochet?

About four hours. That is 23 rounds on the page, from three written lists that make 37 pieces, coming to 588 single crochet, 264 increases and 210 decreases once every piece is worked, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
