Crochet pea pod pattern — two lists, four pieces, 14 rounds

This free crochet pea pod pattern makes a pod about 8 cm long and 3 cm across with three peas of about 2.5 cm each, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in three colours, about an hour and a half of work. Two stitch lists make four pieces here — the five-round pea is worked three times — and every increase and decrease in the nine-round pod falls at the two tips of the oval, which is what keeps it long instead of round. The 14 rounds of both lists follow below, each one carrying the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 14 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Easy

Easy: nine rounds and five rounds of plain single crochet, but round 1 works twenty stitches around a foundation chain rather than into a magic ring.

Eight notes on the pea pod

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a spiral in single crochet throughout — nothing to join and nothing to turn.
03The pod opens on a foundation chain of 10, worked along both sides of it to make an oval base. The app counts that opening round as 20 plain single crochet.
04The fabric is smooth single crochet everywhere — no ribbing, no openwork, no gaps anywhere in the piece. The pod's opening is the top edge of an open oval bowl, not a slit worked into a closed pod.
05Every increase and decrease falls at the two rounded tips of the oval: three increases at each tip on rounds 2 and 3, two decreases at each tip on rounds 7 and 8. The long sides stay plain, and that is what keeps the pod long rather than round.
06The pod's last round changes to cream for a pale rim along the opening. It is a colour change at a round boundary, so carry the pea green up inside or cut it, whichever you prefer.
07The peas are not sewn in. They sit loose in the trough so they can be lifted out and dropped back.
08The pod needs no stuffing — cotton holds the oval on its own. Stuff each pea firmly before closing it.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the pea pod?

Two written lists making four pieces in all, working the peas three times. The page writes out 14 rounds in all, the longest piece being the pod at 9 and the shortest the peas at 5.

How much yarn will the pea pod take?

Three colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for pea green: 1 small ball (~25 g); spring green: scraps (~15 g); cream: scraps (~5 g).

What hook will the pea pod need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~8 cm long and 3 cm across, with three peas about 2.5 cm each; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the pea pod take to crochet?

About one and a half hours. That is 14 rounds on the page, from two written lists that make four pieces, coming to 308 single crochet, 30 increases and 26 decreases once every piece is worked, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
