Maple leaf crochet pattern — a 12-round disc with the leaf embroidered on

This free maple leaf crochet pattern makes a round coaster about 10 cm across, worked on a 3.0 mm hook in four colours, about an hour and a half of work. The leaf is not crocheted at all: twelve rounds take a plain disc from six stitches out to sixty-six, mustard through rust to burnt orange, and the five lobes go on afterwards in chestnut back stitch. Below, all 12 rounds of the single piece are written out with the stitch count each one ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 12 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: one piece, one stitch, six increases every round from start to finish. The only judgement is where to draw the leaf before you embroider it.

Twelve rounds out from a magic ring. Six increases every round, spread evenly, and the disc lies flat on its own.Wash cool and dry flat. A hot wash will shrink cotton and take the disc out of true.

When this piece is doneThe disc is done.Weave the tails in and give it a press while damp. Then draw your maple outline on with the fabric marker and back stitch over the line in chestnut brown — five lobes, a vein up the middle of each, and a short stem. The leaf is the last ten minutes of the project, and it is the part that makes it a maple.

Nine notes on the autumn maple leaf coaster

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02The coaster is a plain round disc of smooth single crochet. There is no openwork in it and no raised texture — the surface is flat, even fabric.
03The maple leaf is not crocheted as a shape. It is embroidered on top of the finished disc in chestnut brown, after the crochet is off the hook.
04Worked in a continuous spiral with six increases every round, which is what keeps the disc flat. Mark the first stitch of each round and move the marker up as you go.
05The last round has no increases. It pulls the rim in a little and leaves a clean brown edge around the orange.
06Every colour change lands at the start of a round, so nothing has to be carried mid-round. Cut the old colour, leave a 10 cm tail, and weave the tails in at the end.
07For the leaf: draw a five-lobed maple outline across the finished disc with the fabric marker, wide enough to reach the rust band, then follow the line in back stitch with the chestnut brown, roughly one embroidery stitch per crochet stitch. Add a centre vein up each lobe and a short stem below the bottom lobe.
08Cotton at a tight gauge is what makes it lie flat under a mug. Wool is springier and will want to cup.
09Machine washable if the cotton is. Wash cool, press flat while damp, and dry flat rather than hanging.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Is there a gauge to match for the autumn maple leaf coaster?

No stitches-to-the-centimetre figure to match, because nobody has swatched this one; what the pattern asks for instead is a technique: tighter than you would work a scarf. The disc has to sit flat under a mug rather than ripple at the rim — if yours ripples, drop half a hook size before you try to work tighter by hand.

How much yarn will the autumn maple leaf coaster take?

Four colours, all weight 3 (light worsted), and the pattern asks for mustard: small amount, under 10 g; rust red: small amount, under 10 g; burnt orange: small amount, under 15 g; chestnut brown: scraps, plus about 3 m for the embroidery.

What hook will the autumn maple leaf coaster need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.0 mm hook, US D/3. Finished, it comes out ~10 cm across; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the autumn maple leaf coaster take to crochet?

About one and a half hours. That is 12 rounds of the autumn maple leaf coaster, worked as one piece, coming to 342 single crochet and 60 increases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
