Crochet mushroom pattern — a toadstool in two pieces, 24 rounds

This is a free crochet mushroom pattern for a red-capped toadstool about 9 cm tall, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in three colours over roughly four and a half hours. The spots are tapestry colourwork rather than appliqué: rounds 8, 9 and 10 of the cap each carry the cream behind the red, widening from three stitches to five and back to three, so every spot comes out as a lens instead of a stripe. All 24 rounds are written out below across two pieces, each one carrying the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 24 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Medium

Medium for one reason: rounds 8, 9 and 10 of the cap change colour six times each, carrying the cream behind the red across thirty-six stitches without either yarn being broken.

Tension
Tight enough that no stuffing shows between the stitches, and tight enough that the carried cream does not grin through the red. Exact gauge is not critical — a looser hand gives a wider cap on the same counts.
Finished size
~6 cm across the cap, ~9 cm tall
The spots are the only place this depends on colour. A cream cap with cocoa spots works the identical rounds and gives a different mushroom; nothing in the counts changes.

The cap

Six increase rounds out to thirty-six stitches, four straight rounds…13 RNDS

Six increase rounds out to thirty-six stitches, four straight rounds, then three decrease rounds back to eighteen. The three cream spots live in rounds 8, 9 and 10 — three stitches wide, then five, then three again.Carry the cream loosely behind the red through rounds 8 to 10. Pulled tight, the float draws those three rounds in and the cap narrows exactly where it is meant to be widest.

When this piece is doneThe cap is done.Stuff the cap firmly and leave the eighteen stitches of round 13 open — that is the seam onto the stalk, not a hole to close. Stand it on its rim and look at it: the spots should sit on the curve of the side, not on the flat of the top.

When this piece is doneThe stalk is done.Stuff it lightly and right to the last round — a stalk packed hard goes barrel-shaped, and one left soft at the top lets the cap tip off centre. Leave a long tail to sew the two rings of eighteen together.

Three notes on the toadstool

Read them
01Spots are worked in tapestry colourwork over three rounds — carry the cream loosely behind the red.
02Stuff the cap firmly and the stalk lightly, so it stands.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How is the colour worked into the toadstool?

Inside the round, not at the start of it: three of the 24 rounds carry a colour run, all of them in the cap. Each of those rounds gives the run in stitches: round 8 of the cap is seven runs of colour, beginning four cap red, then three spot cream, and so on round the piece.

How much yarn will the toadstool take?

Three colours, all weight 3 (light worsted), and the pattern asks for red: 1 skein; cream: scraps; oatmeal: scraps.

What hook will the toadstool need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm (E) hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~6 cm across the cap, ~9 cm tall; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the toadstool take to crochet?

About four and a half hours. That is 24 rounds across two pieces, coming to 420 single crochet, 42 increases and 18 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
