Free crochet gingerbread man pattern — five pieces, 45 rounds written out

A free crochet gingerbread man pattern for a 10 cm figure, worked on a 3.0 mm hook in four colours, about two and a half hours' work. Head and body are one unbroken run of twenty-three rounds: out to 30 for the head, held there for six rounds, pulled in to 12 at the neck on round 14, then opened again for the body. Round 16 goes into the front loops only and round 21 into the back loops only; the count holds at 18 on both, and the two ridges they leave standing are the lines the arms and legs are sewn against. All 45 rounds are written out below across five pieces, each carrying the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 45 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

  • 4 render matches the pattern — no image has been compared against its own prompt, so a render showing a piece the rounds do not make would not be caught here. Nothing has counted how many do.
  • 6a recognisability — provenance.recognisability is empty in every pattern, so there is no feature list to check the parts against.
Why it is rated Medium

Medium for the two single-loop rounds. Round 16 takes the front loops and round 21 the back loops, and the ridges they leave are the only guide for placing four limbs.

Twenty-three rounds in one run. The head opens to thirty and holds for six rounds, then pulls right in to twelve at the neck before opening out again for the body.Round 16 goes into the front loops only and round 21 into the back loops only. The count holds at 18 on both, so if you lose your place, keep counting and pick the ridge up next time round.

Two the same. Out to nine stitches, three short rounds with a white cuff in the middle, then back in to six.Leave a long tail on each. The arms sit one round below the collar ridge, set a little behind the legs so they read as arms rather than a second pair of legs.

Nine notes on the gingerbread man

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral. Nothing is joined and nothing is turned, so mark the first stitch of every round and carry the marker up as you go.
03Head and body are one unbroken piece. The head opens out to 30 stitches and holds there for six rounds, then closes to 12 at the neck before opening again for the body.
04Round 16 of the head and body goes into the front loops only, and round 21 into the back loops only. Neither changes the count — an 18 stitch round is still 18 stitches in and 18 stitches out. Working one loop leaves a small ridge standing on the surface, and those two ridges give you a clean line to sew the arms and legs against.
05The white cuffs on the arms and legs are plain colour changes at a round boundary. Cut the gingerbread brown, leave a tail to weave in, work the white round, then pick the brown back up on the next round.
06The icing piping is surface embroidery rather than crochet. Thread white on a tapestry needle and work a line of chain stitch down the outside of each arm and each leg once the figure is assembled. The app counts crochet stitches, so none of this appears on the counting screen.
07The three buttons are cherry red satin-stitch dots down the front of the body, and the collar is a line of mint green chain stitch worked along the front-loop ridge of round 16.
08The face is white icing: two small dots for the eyes and a curved line for the mouth. Embroidered features are the right choice for anything a small child will hold.
09Stuff the head firmly through the neck before you work past round 16, and stuff the body as you close the last few rounds. The arms take a pinch of filling each; the legs stay flat and unstuffed.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the gingerbread man?

Five pieces from three lists: the page mirrors the arms and the legs, writing those lists out a second time. The page writes out 45 rounds in all, the longest piece being the head and body at 23 and the shortest the arms at 5.

How much yarn will the gingerbread man take?

Four colours, all weight 3 (light worsted), and the pattern asks for gingerbread brown: 1 skein, about half of it; icing white: scraps; cherry red: a short length; mint green: a short length.

What hook will the gingerbread man need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.0 mm hook, US D/3. Finished, it comes out ~10 cm tall with the legs sewn on, about 4.5 cm across the head; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the gingerbread man take to crochet?

About two and a half hours. That is 45 rounds across five pieces, coming to 522 single crochet, 54 increases and 54 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
