Free crochet pattern for a mini Christmas stocking — two pieces, 38 rounds

A free crochet pattern mini Christmas stocking makers can finish in an evening, 9 cm tall from the sole to the top of the cuff and about 13 cm around the cuff, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in four colours, about two hours' work. The ankle leans over without a single row worked back: on rounds 10 to 13, two decreases go in at the back edge and two increases at the front edge of the same round, so the count holds at 20 while the tube tips into a foot. Round 23 is worked in back loops only, and the ridge it leaves is the line the white cuff folds down along. All 38 rounds are written out below across two pieces, with the number of stitches it leaves you on printed beside it.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 38 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Easy

Easy on the stitch — every round is plain single crochet — with one thing to hold: for four rounds the decreases stay at the back and the increases at the front, or the foot points the wrong way.

Optional

Gauge and finished size

Tension
Worked tightly enough that no stuffing or filling shows between the stitches. Gauge is not critical here — a looser hand only makes a slightly larger stocking.
Finished size
~9 cm tall from the sole to the top of the cuff, and about 13 cm around the cuff
Any four scraps that read as festive together will do, and a single colour throughout works too. Leave the stocking hollow if you want it to hold a sweet, or stuff the toe lightly so it hangs with a curve in it rather than flat.

Nine notes on the mini christmas stocking

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in one continuous spiral from the toe upwards, so there is nothing to join and no seam up the back.
03The bend at the ankle is made inside the round: two decreases at the back edge and two increases at the front edge of the same round, so the count stays at 20 while the tube leans over. That gives a soft curved ankle rather than a squared-off heel cup.
04Round 23 is worked in back loops only. It is still 24 single crochet, one stitch in and one stitch out, and the free front loops leave a small ridge the white cuff folds down along.
05The whole piece is smooth single crochet. The colour bands are plain two-round changes made at the start of a round; there is no ribbing, no clusters, no openwork and no gaps anywhere in it.
06The hanging loop is a narrow four-stitch cord standing in for the chain loop a written stocking pattern would use, because this format counts stitches in rounds. Sew both ends to the inside of the cuff at the back.
07Leave the stocking hollow so it can hold a sweet, or stuff the toe lightly so it hangs with a curve in it rather than flat.
08The colours are a suggestion. Any four scraps that read as festive together will work, and a single colour throughout works too.
09Sizes and amounts here are recommendations for the scale this was designed at, not a tested yardage.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the mini christmas stocking?

Two separate pieces, one written list each. The page writes out 38 rounds in all, the longest piece being the stocking at 26 and the shortest the hanging loop at 12.

How much yarn will the mini christmas stocking take?

Four colours, all weight 3, and the pattern asks for cranberry: scraps (~8 g); forest green: scraps (~5 g); cream: scraps (~3 g); white: scraps (~6 g).

What hook will the mini christmas stocking need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~9 cm tall from the sole to the top of the cuff, and about 13 cm around the cuff; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the mini christmas stocking take to crochet?

About two hours. That is 38 rounds across two pieces, coming to 504 single crochet, 26 increases and 8 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
