Free crochet pattern for Christmas gnomes — five pieces, 48 rounds written out

Crochet Christmas gnomes free pattern, sized for one 13 cm figure: five pieces worked on a 4.0 mm hook in five colours, about three hours' work. The beard is not crocheted — about thirty folded strands of cream are knotted into body rounds 9 and 10 the way a tassel goes onto a scarf — and that is why there is nothing to embroider. The hat brim comes down level with round 12, the beard comes up from round 10, and the oatmeal nose is the only thing left showing between them. All 48 rounds are written out below across five pieces, each carrying the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 48 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Medium

Medium is the hat: twelve rounds carrying two increases each, and the pair has to move a stitch or two along every round or the cone twists instead of standing straight.

You likely have

Tapestry needle

Stitch markers
Measuring tape

You need to buy

Polyester stuffing (~40 g)

Optional

A comb, for teasing the beard strands open before you trim them
A pinch of rice or dried lentils in the base, if you want the gnome to sit heavy

Gauge and finished size

the last check before you cast on
Tension
Tight enough that no stuffing shows between stitches. Gauge is not critical here — a looser hand makes a taller gnome, and the proportions still hold.
Finished size
~13 cm tall to the tip of the hat, about 5 cm across the base
Any worsted yarn on a hook a size below its label behaves the same way here. Cut the beard strands at 14 cm whatever the yarn — the beard is trimmed to length rather than counted, so a heavier yarn needs fewer strands, not longer ones.

A flat disc for the base, one round in back loops to stand the wall up, then eight straight rounds and a close. This is the gnome — everything else is decoration.Keep the free front loops from round 5 visible on the outside. They give the base its edge.

A long slow cone, two increases a round from round 2 to round 13, then three straight rounds for the brim. Stagger the increases a stitch or two each round so the cone does not twist.Fasten off with a long tail — you will sew the brim right around the body.

Eight notes on the christmas gnome

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Everything is worked in a continuous spiral. Nothing is joined and nothing is turned, so mark the first stitch of each round and move the marker up as you go.
03Round 5 of the body is worked in back loops only. It is still 24 single crochet in and 24 out, so the count is unchanged — the free front loops just make a crisp edge where the flat base turns up into the wall, and the gnome stands square because of it.
04The beard is not crocheted. Cut about 30 strands of cream 14 cm long, fold each in half, draw the fold through a stitch on body round 10 with the hook and pull the two ends through the loop, the way a tassel is tied onto a scarf. Work across the front third of the round, then add a second row of strands into round 9 underneath for thickness. Comb the strands open and trim to a rounded beard about 5 cm long.
05The original sketch for this gnome worked the beard in rows and the boot soles from a chain. Neither is something this app can count, so the beard became a knotted fringe and each boot now starts on a magic ring instead of a chain. Both changes are noted here so you know the design moved.
06There is no face. The hat brim comes down level with body round 12 and the beard hangs from round 10, so the only thing showing between them is the nose. That is the whole joke of a gnome, and it means no safety eyes and nothing to embroider — which also makes this one safe for a small child.
07Stuff the body firmly, adding more as you work rounds 14 to 16 — you cannot reach in once the top closes. The nose wants to be stuffed hard so it stands proud. The hat and the boots stay unstuffed, so the hat tip flops the way it should.
08Yarn, hook and colours are suggestions sized to the finished measurement given. Any worsted yarn with a hook a size below its label will behave the same way.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the christmas gnome?

Five pieces from four lists: the page mirrors the boots, writing that list out a second time. The page writes out 48 rounds in all, the longest piece being the body at 16 and the shortest the nose at 4.

How much yarn will the christmas gnome take?

Five colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for heather grey: about 40 g; cranberry red: about 30 g; cream: about 15 g, roughly 30 strands of 14 cm; oatmeal: scraps; forest green: scraps.

What hook will the christmas gnome need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~13 cm tall to the tip of the hat, about 5 cm across the base; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the christmas gnome take to crochet?

About three hours. That is 48 rounds across five pieces, coming to 642 single crochet, 60 increases and 30 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
