Crochet snowman pattern — six pieces, 67 rounds written out

A free crochet snowman pattern for a 14 cm figure, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in five colours, about three and a half hours' work. Body and head are one piece of twenty-seven rounds with no join anywhere: out to 36 stitches for the lower ball, in to 12 at round 16, back out to 30 for the head, then closed. The scarf is picked up afterwards from the free front loops of that waist round — twelve stitches all the way around it — so it grows out of him and cannot slide off. All 67 rounds are written out below across six pieces, with the number of stitches it leaves you on printed beside it.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 67 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Medium

Medium is the waist. Round 16 takes the body down to 12 stitches, and the lower ball has to be packed firmly before it closes, because nothing reaches back in afterwards.

Fifteen notes on the snowman

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02The whole snowman is worked in a continuous spiral. Nothing is joined and nothing is turned, so keep a marker in the first stitch of each round.
03Body and head are one unbroken piece with no seam to hide. Round 16 is the waist at 12 stitches — that narrow point is what makes the head read as a head rather than a bump.
04Stuff the lower ball firmly before you close down to the waist at round 16. You cannot reach back in once the neck narrows.
05Stuff the head through rounds 24 to 26, a little at a time, and cinch the last 6 stitches shut through their front loops with the tapestry needle.
06Round 6 of the hat is worked in back loops only; that ridge is what turns the flat crown down into the wall so the hat sits square. Round 11 is worked in back loops only for the same reason, and it makes the brim flare out with a crisp corner instead of a soft curve.
07The hat band is a colour change at a round boundary — round 9 changes to cranberry red, round 11 changes back to coal black. Change on the last pull-through of the round before, and the jog barely shows.
08The scarf starts in the free front loops of body round 16, worked all the way around the waist. Because it grows out of the snowman it can never slip off. Rounds 1 to 3 are the collar; rounds 4 to 11 narrow into the hanging tail.
09The hanging end of the scarf is simulated as a 4-stitch tube rather than a flat strip, which is the closest this format comes to a length of scarf. Flatten and press it once it is off the hook and it reads correctly.
10The arms are unstuffed 5-stitch tubes. Flatten the open end and sew each one to the side of the lower ball at round 10, at the same height on both sides — measure rather than eyeball it.
11The nose starts on a magic ring of 4, which is fiddly. Stuff it with a pinch of fibre and sew it to the head between rounds 21 and 22, centred.
12Eyes and mouth are embroidered in black rather than made with safety eyes, which keeps the snowman safe for a small child. Two French knots or small satin patches for eyes just above the nose, and five or six tiny stitches curving down for the coal mouth.
13Three black stitches down the front of the lower ball make the coal buttons.
14Yarn brands, hook and colours here are suggestions for the scale the pattern was drafted at. Any worsted yarn on a 3.5 mm hook lands close.
15Counts chain mathematically, but this design has not been test-crocheted. Treat it as a first draft and adjust as you go.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the snowman?

Six pieces from five lists: the page mirrors the twig arms, writing that list out a second time. The page writes out 67 rounds in all, the longest piece being the body and head at 27 and the shortest the carrot nose at 4.

How much yarn will the snowman take?

Five colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for snow white: 1 skein (about 60 m used); coal black: small amount (about 25 m); cranberry red: scraps (about 10 m); carrot orange: scraps; chestnut brown: scraps.

What hook will the snowman need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~14 cm tall to the top of the hat, ~6.5 cm across the lower ball; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the snowman take to crochet?

About three and a half hours. That is 67 rounds across six pieces, coming to 956 single crochet, 93 increases and 56 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
