Free snowy owl crochet pattern — one sphere, six pieces, 33 rounds

A free snowy owl crochet pattern for an amigurumi about 5 cm across and 8 cm tall, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in three colours over about five hours. The owl is one sphere and nothing else — five rounds out to thirty, eight straight rounds that make it a barrel rather than a ball, four rounds back in — and the five pieces left are all flat: two slate wings, two amber eye discs and a beak. All 33 rounds are written out below across six pieces, each one carrying the count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 33 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

  • 4 render matches the pattern — no image has been compared against its own prompt, so a render showing a piece the rounds do not make would not be caught here. Nothing has counted how many do.
  • 6a recognisability — provenance.recognisability is empty in every pattern, so there is no feature list to check the parts against.
Why it is rated Medium

Medium for the counting rather than the stitches: rounds 6 to 13 are eight identical rounds of 30 sc, and dropping two of them turns the barrel back into a ball.

Tight enough that the stuffing cannot show between the stitches. The body is the only piece holding any, and white shows every gap that slate or amber would hide.

Any DK cotton or a light worsted works here. Keep the wings dark enough to read against the body — on a white bird every piece of the shaping depends on that one contrast.

Seventeen rounds and the whole owl. Out to thirty stitches over five rounds, eight straight rounds that make it a barrel rather than a ball, then four rounds back in to six.Rounds 6 to 13 are eight identical rounds of 30 and nothing marks them apart. The straight run is what makes the owl a barrel; lose two of them and you have a sphere with wings on it.

Six pieces from four lists. Two lists — the wings and the eye discs — are written once and worked twice, identical round for round; the grey bars are piece length, all drawn to the same scale.33 ROUNDS IN ALL

Three notes on the snowy owl

Read them
01Set the safety eyes through the amber discs before sewing them on.
02Sew the wings high and close, so they read as folded.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the snowy owl?

Six pieces from four lists: the page mirrors the wings and the eye discs, writing those lists out a second time. The page writes out 33 rounds in all, the longest piece being the body at 17 and the shortest the eye discs at 2.

How much yarn will the snowy owl take?

Three colours, all weight 3, and the pattern asks for snow: 1 skein; slate: scraps; amber: scraps.

What hook will the snowy owl need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm (E) hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~5 cm across, ~8 cm tall; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the snowy owl take to crochet?

About five hours. That is 33 rounds across six pieces, coming to 398 single crochet, 48 increases and 36 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
