Crochet egg pattern — one piece, fourteen rounds, speckles at the end

A speckled egg about 6 cm tall and 4 cm across, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in one shell colour with two more for the markings, in about three quarters of an hour. The egg shape is in the closing: rounds 11 and 12 take out three stitches each where a ball would take out six, so the top tapers over four rounds while the base stays blunt. This crochet egg pattern writes out all fourteen rounds with the count each one ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 14 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: one piece, plain single crochet from the ring to the last round, and no colour change at all — the markings are French knots worked after it is closed.

Open out to twenty-four, run straight for six rounds, then close the top more slowly than you opened the base. That uneven closing is the whole trick — a ball narrows at both ends, an egg narrows at one.Stuff it firmly before the last two rounds close the top. Those rounds are the hardest to reach back into, and an egg that gives under a thumb has lost the shape.

When this piece is doneThe egg is done.Stuff it firmly before the last round, close the hole with the tail through the front loops, and pull it snug so the point sits neat. Now the speckles: split a strand to two plies and work French knots across the wide half, chestnut first and soft pink dropped into the gaps.

Seven notes on the speckled bird egg

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral in plain single crochet from the first round to the last. The fabric comes out smooth and even — there is no ribbing, no openwork and no gaps anywhere in it, and the egg reads as an egg through its shape alone.
03The egg shape comes from six straight rounds at 24 instead of the four a ball would take, and from a top that narrows over four rounds while the base stays blunt. Take out one straight round for a rounder egg, add one for a longer one.
04The speckles are French knots embroidered onto the finished shell after stuffing, not crocheted in and not sewn-on pieces. Work them once the egg is closed so you can see where they land.
05For the speckles, split a strand down to two plies and scatter twenty to thirty knots over the widest half of the egg, thinning them out towards the narrow end the way a real clutch is marked. Chestnut first, then a dozen soft pink knots dropped into the gaps.
06Cream makes a good alternative shell colour if you would rather a quail's egg than a songbird's — the chestnut and pink speckles read just as well on it.
07Stuff firmly in the last two rounds. An egg that gives under a thumb has lost its shape, and the top rounds are the hardest to reach once they close.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the speckled bird egg be made with a different hook or yarn?

Cream instead of the robin's egg blue reads as a quail's egg and takes the same chestnut and pink knots. Worsted on a 4 mm hook gives a larger egg on the same fourteen rounds.

How much yarn will the speckled bird egg take?

Three colours, all weight 3 (light worsted), and the pattern asks for robin's egg blue: 1 small ball (~15 g); chestnut brown: scraps; soft pink: scraps.

What hook will the speckled bird egg need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~6 cm tall and ~4 cm across; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the speckled bird egg take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 14 rounds of the speckled bird egg, worked as one piece, coming to 207 single crochet, 18 increases and 18 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
