Crochet chick pattern — one piece, twelve counted rounds, no seams

A chick about 5 cm tall and 4 cm across, worked on a 3.5 mm hook with one colour on the hook and two more for the needle, in about forty-five minutes. Twelve rounds hold every shaping move it has: four opening out to 24, five straight rounds through the middle where the eyes and the beak go, three closing back in. This free crochet chick pattern writes out all twelve rounds with the count each one ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 12 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: one piece, twelve rounds and nothing to sew. Three rounds of increases, five straight, three of decreases, and everything else goes on with a needle at the end.

Not critical. Work tight enough that the stuffing does not show between stitches — a looser hand gives you a bigger chick and nothing worse.

Nine notes on the baby chick

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral. Nothing is joined and nothing is turned, so mark the first stitch of every round and move the marker up as you go.
03Rounds 5 to 9 are the straight middle of the ball. Set the safety eyes between rounds 6 and 7, about 5 stitches apart, while the body is still open — once the decreases start you cannot reach the backs of them.
04Round 9 can be worked in back loops only if you want a faint ridge where the body starts curving in. The stitch count does not change: it is still 24 stitches in and 24 out.
05Stuff the body firmly during round 11 and add a little more before you close round 12. A chick that is understuffed loses the round shape the decreases were designed to hold.
06The beak is embroidery, not crochet: three straight stitches in orange worked over rounds 6 and 7, centred between the eyes, each one a little shorter than the last so they read as a small triangle.
07The wings are embroidered, not crocheted: four or five long stitches in yellow fanning back from round 7 on each side, the same length on both.
08The feet are embroidery too — three orange stitches side by side under the front of the body at round 10, close enough together that the chick sits rather than straddles.
09Everything that is not a stitch count is worked on the surface at the end, so the chick is one piece with nothing to sew together.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the baby chick be made with a different hook or yarn?

Worsted on a 4 mm hook gives a larger chick on the same twelve rounds; DK on a 3 mm hook gives a smaller one. The counts do not change either way.

How much yarn will the baby chick take?

Three colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for buttercup yellow: 1 skein, well under half of it; tangerine orange: scraps; black: a short length.

What hook will the baby chick need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~5 cm tall, about 4 cm across; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the baby chick take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 12 rounds of the baby chick, worked as one piece, coming to 162 single crochet, 18 increases and 18 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
