Sunflower crochet pattern — 21 pieces, 91 rounds written out

This is a free sunflower crochet pattern for a bloom about 14 cm across on a stem around 25 cm tall, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in five colours. Round 7 of the green back is the round that assembles the flower: it works all forty-eight stitches through both discs at once, catching each of the sixteen petals as it passes, three stitches apart and alternating gold with marigold. All 91 rounds are written out below across seven lists that make twenty-one pieces, each one carrying the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 91 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Medium

Medium for one round: round 7 of the green back is worked through both 48-stitch discs while sixteen pinned petals are caught between them, three stitches apart and alternating colour.

You need to buy

Polyester stuffing (~15 g)
Wooden dowel 5 mm x 20 cm, or florist wire 2 mm doubled, x1
Floral tape, to pad the dowel before the sleeve goes on

Optional

A contrast stitch marker for counting the three stitches between petals
A small pot and a handful of pebbles to stand the finished stem in

Gauge and finished size

the last check before you cast on
Tension
Not critical. Work tight enough that the light does not come through the petals and the stuffing does not show at the centre. A looser hand gives a larger flower on the same counts.
Finished size
~14 cm across the bloom, about 25 cm tall on its stem
One yellow throughout instead of two loses the alternation and nothing else — the counts and the spacing are identical. A doubled length of florist wire takes the place of the dowel if you want a stem that bends.

Eight stitches in a ring, then eight more every round until the disc is 48 wide. Two of those rounds go into back loops only, and that is what gives the middle its grain.Leave a long tail. It is useful for holding the two discs together while you pin.

Ten notes on the sunflower

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Everything is worked in a continuous spiral. Nothing is joined and nothing is turned, so mark the first stitch of every round and move the marker as you pass it.
03Rounds 4 and 6 of the centre front disc are worked in back loops only. The two ridges they leave are what make the middle read as a seed head rather than flat brown.
04Round 5 of the centre front carries taupe behind the brown for one stitch in every five — eight small flecks, evenly spaced. Carry the taupe loosely so the disc still lies flat.
05Round 7 of the centre back is worked through both discs at once. Pin the sixteen petals between the layers first, three stitches apart, alternating golden and marigold, and catch each petal as you pass it.
06Stuff the centre lightly through the gap before the last five or six stitches of that joining round. It wants to be rounded, not firm.
07The petals and the leaves are never stuffed. Press each one flat between your fingers before pinning.
08The leaves are worked as long flat tubes from a magic ring instead of around a foundation chain, since the format counts only sc, inc and dec. Pinched flat and seamed along the last round, they read as pointed leaves.
09The stem cover is a sleeve. It goes over a dowel or a doubled length of florist wire, not around stuffing, and the bloom sews to its closed top end.
10Sixteen petals are written here as two parts of eight so the alternation is easy to follow. Work all eight of one colour, then all eight of the other.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How is the colour worked into the sunflower?

Inside the round, not at the start of it: one of the 91 rounds carries a colour run — round 5 of the seed head, which is sixteen runs of colour, beginning four chocolate brown, then one taupe, and so on round the piece.

How much yarn will the sunflower take?

Five colours, all weight 3 (light worsted), and the pattern asks for golden yellow: ~20 m; marigold: ~20 m; chocolate brown: ~15 m; taupe: scraps; leaf green: ~45 m.

What hook will the sunflower need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~14 cm across the bloom, about 25 cm tall on its stem; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the sunflower take to crochet?

About six and a half hours. That is 91 rounds on the page, from seven written lists that make 21 pieces, coming to 1,364 single crochet, 194 increases and 108 decreases once every piece is worked, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
