Crochet lemon pattern worked flat: a 10 cm citrus slice coaster in seven rounds

Worked flat as a coaster, ~10 cm across: a free crochet lemon pattern on a 3.5 mm hook in two colours, about forty-five minutes' work. It opens on a magic ring of eight rather than the usual six and adds exactly eight stitches every round with the increase moved one stitch further along each time, which is why the disc is still a circle at 56 stitches where a six-point disc has started to read as a hexagon. All seven rounds are written out below for the one piece, each carrying the stitch count it ends on, and the eight segment lines go on afterwards as surface embroidery.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 7 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: one piece, one stitch and one rule repeated seven times. The only judgement is spacing the eight embroidered segment lines at the end.

Not critical, but keep it firm. A flat disc is a balance between hook and hand — if the coaster cups, work looser; if the rim ruffles, work tighter or drop half a hook size.

Then thread the cream and lay eight straight stitches from the centre out to the rim, spacing them 7 stitches apart around round 7. Work them one opposite the other — north, south, east, west, then halve each quarter — and they come out even without measuring.

Eight notes on the citrus slice coaster

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral — nothing to join, nothing to turn. Mark the first stitch of every round.
03It opens on a magic ring of 8 rather than the usual 6. Eight increases a round keeps the circle round out to 56 stitches, where a six-point disc has started to read as a hexagon.
04Every round adds exactly 8 stitches and no round runs straight. Move the increase one stitch further along each round so the disc has no spoke of ridges in it.
05Rounds 1 to 5 are the fruit, rounds 6 and 7 are the cream rim — pith and peel together.
06The eight segment lines are surface embroidery, added after the last round: straight stitches in cream laid from the centre out to the cream rim, eight of them, evenly spaced around the disc. They carry no round of their own. Count 7 stitches along round 7 between one line and the next and they land evenly.
07The original sketch divided the segments with chain spaces. This version works a plain solid disc instead and puts the segments on top as embroidery, so the fabric stays closed and a wet glass cannot drip through.
08Lime green, tangerine orange or watermelon pink stand in for the lemon yellow without a single change to the counts. A set of four in different fruits uses the same cream twice over.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the citrus slice coaster be made with a different hook or yarn?

Lime green, tangerine orange and watermelon pink each stand in for the lemon yellow without a single change to the counts, and a set of four fruits uses the same cream rim twice over.

How much yarn will the citrus slice coaster take?

Two colours, all weight 3, and the pattern asks for lemon yellow: small amount (~15 g); cream white: small amount (~8 g).

What hook will the citrus slice coaster need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~10 cm across; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the citrus slice coaster take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 7 rounds of the citrus slice coaster, worked as one piece, coming to 128 single crochet and 48 increases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
