Crochet rattle pattern: one piece, twelve rounds, closed on itself

A free crochet rattle pattern for a ring ~8 cm across the outer edge with a hole about 5 cm wide, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in three colours over about an hour and a half. There is no magic ring in it: round 1 goes into a chain of 24 joined into a circle, and the twelve rounds are symmetrical about the middle — four increases a round out to 40, three straight rounds around the outer curve, then four decreases a round back to the 24 it began with, so the last round closes onto the foundation chain. The colour bands mirror the same way, cream to sage to blue and back again. All twelve rounds are written out below for the single piece, each carrying the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 12 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: one piece, one stitch, and twelve rounds that mirror each other — four increases a round out, three straight, four decreases a round back to the count it started on.

Gauge and finished size

the last check before you cast on
Tension
Work tighter than the yarn label suggests. The fabric has to be dense enough that no stuffing shows between stitches and nothing inside can work its way out. Exact gauge is not critical — a looser hand makes a larger ring.
Finished size
~8 cm across the outer edge, with a hole about 5 cm wide
Firm cotton is what keeps this washable and keeps the stuffing in. Whatever you use, keep it smooth: nothing fluffy, nothing that sheds, and nothing with a novelty thread plied through it.

Chain 24, join the chain into a circle without letting it twist, and work round 1 into it. That circle is the hole a baby grips through.Warm hand wash, squeeze out the water rather than wringing, and dry it flat. Check the closing seam now and then, the way you would with any toy that gets chewed.

Eight notes on the baby rattle ring

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Made for a baby, so nothing is glued, pinned or pushed through the fabric. No safety eyes, no buttons, and no loose beads or pellets anywhere in the stuffing. The sound comes from a single sealed plastic rattle capsule, moulded in one piece, which goes inside before the ring is closed.
03Every round is plain single crochet in a continuous spiral. The fabric comes out smooth and even, with no ribbing, no texture and no gaps — the colour bands are the only pattern on it.
04This part has no magic ring. Chain 24 and join the chain into a circle without twisting it, then work round 1 into those 24 chains. That circle becomes the hole in the middle of the ring.
05Rounds 1 to 5 open out over the front of the ring, rounds 6 to 8 run around the outer edge, and rounds 9 to 12 come back in to meet the start on the other side. The finished ring is about 2 cm thick.
06Colour changes happen at the start of rounds 3, 5, 9 and 11, so no yarn is carried through the middle of a round.
07Stuff a little at a time as you go, firmly, and add the capsule when about two thirds of the ring is filled. Close the last round to the foundation chain with the working tail, working all the way around, and bury the tail inside.
08Wash it. Cotton and toy-grade stuffing both take a warm hand wash, and a baby toy will need one.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the baby rattle ring be made with a different hook or yarn?

Firm cotton is what keeps this washable and keeps the stuffing in. Whatever you use, keep it smooth: nothing fluffy, nothing that sheds, and nothing with a novelty thread plied through it.

How much yarn will the baby rattle ring take?

Three colours, all weight 4, and the pattern asks for cream: small amount (~10 g); soft sage: small amount (~12 g); dusty blue: small amount (~15 g).

What hook will the baby rattle ring need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~8 cm across the outer edge, with a hole about 5 cm wide; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the baby rattle ring take to crochet?

About one and a half hours. That is 12 rounds of the baby rattle ring, worked as one piece, coming to 352 single crochet, 16 increases and 16 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
