Crochet ear warmer pattern — one piece, 15 rounds of 84 stitches

A free crochet ear warmer pattern for a band about 54 cm around and 7.5 cm deep, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in two colours. Fifteen rounds of 84 single crochet, and the only event in the whole piece is a cream stripe on rounds 7, 8 and 9 with mustard on either side of it. Every one of the 15 rounds is written out with the count it ends on, so you can find your place again without unpicking to look.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 15 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: one stitch and one count for the whole band. The two colour joins on rounds 7 and 10 are the only places anything happens.

Seven notes on the ear warmer

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Start by chaining 84 and joining the chain into a ring without twisting it, then work round 1 into those 84 chains. The chain is the foundation only — every stitch in the pattern is a single crochet.
03Worked in a continuous spiral with no joining and no turning. Mark the first stitch of each round and move the marker up as you pass it.
04The fabric is smooth single crochet all the way through. It has no ribbing, so it stretches gently rather than gripping.
05Rounds 7 to 9 change to cream at the round boundary and round 10 changes back. Carry nothing — cut each colour, leave a 15 cm tail, and weave the ends in along the inside face when you finish.
06Nothing is sewn and nothing is stuffed. Weave in the four ends, press the band flat, and it is ready to wear.
07To resize, add or remove stitches in round 1 in multiples of six: each six stitches is about 4 cm of head circumference.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Is there a gauge to match for the ear warmer?

No stitches-to-the-centimetre figure to match, because nobody has swatched this one; what the pattern asks for instead is a technique: worked at normal tension rather than the tight amigurumi hand. Gauge decides whether this fits, so hold the first three rounds against your head before going any further — the band never changes width after that.

How much yarn will the ear warmer take?

Two colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for mustard: ~35 g (about a third of a 100 g skein); cream: ~10 g.

What hook will the ear warmer need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~54 cm around and ~7.5 cm deep — fits an average adult head with a little stretch; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the ear warmer take to crochet?

About two and a half hours. That is 15 rounds of the ear warmer, worked as one piece, coming to 1,260 single crochet, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
