Crochet scrunchie pattern — one piece, 8 rounds of 64 stitches

A free crochet scrunchie pattern for a band about 3.5 cm wide that sits 9 cm across relaxed and stretches to roughly 17 cm around a ponytail, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in four colours in under an hour. Everything the piece does happens on round 1, where 64 stitches go directly around a plain hair elastic — deliberately more than the elastic can hold flat, so the fabric has to gather; the seven rounds above it never touch the count and only change colour, at rounds 3, 5 and 7. All 8 rounds are written out with the count each one ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 8 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: eight rounds, one stitch, no shaping. The only awkward moment is round 1, where every stitch goes around an elastic rather than into fabric.

Tension
Gauge is not critical. What matters is round 1: pack the stitches close enough that no rubber shows between them. Fewer than 64 gives a thin, limp band; more gives a fuller one.
Finished size
~9 cm across relaxed, on a band about 3.5 cm wide; it stretches to roughly 17 cm around a ponytail or a wrist

How to make the scrunchie

Sixty-four single crochet worked around a plain hair elastic, then seven more rounds on top of them. Nothing increases, nothing decreases, and the count never moves.Cotton takes washing well. Wash it by hand in cool water and dry it flat, so the elastic keeps its snap.

Eight notes on the scrunchie

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Every stitch here is a plain single crochet, so the fabric comes out smooth. There is no ribbing, no texture stitch and no openwork anywhere in it — the gathered look comes entirely from crowding more stitches onto the elastic than can lie flat.
03Round 1 is worked around the hair elastic itself rather than into a magic ring, which is why this part opens on existing material instead of a ring.
04Worked in a continuous spiral. Nothing is joined, nothing is sewn, and the piece is finished the moment the last round closes.
05The four colours change on round boundaries, so you only ever carry one yarn at a time. Cut and rejoin at each change and weave the ends along the inside edge.
06The app draws the band as an even ring of stitches. On the elastic it will not sit that way: it gathers and bunches, and the bunching is the whole point. Read the diagram as a stitch map rather than a picture of the finished thing.
07For a frillier version, add one more round working two single crochet into every stitch. That extra round is not counted in the rounds above.
08Keep the elastic untwisted as you come back around, or the band will spiral instead of sitting flat against it.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Is there a gauge to match for the scrunchie?

No stitches-to-the-centimetre figure to match, because nobody has swatched this one; what the pattern asks for instead is a technique: gauge is not critical. What matters is round 1: pack the stitches close enough that no rubber shows between them. Fewer than 64 gives a thin, limp band; more gives a fuller one.

How much yarn will the scrunchie take?

Four colours, all weight 3 (light worsted), and the pattern asks for lilac: scraps, about 10 m; butter yellow: scraps, about 10 m; terracotta: scraps, about 10 m; cream: scraps, about 10 m.

What hook will the scrunchie need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~9 cm across relaxed, on a band about 3.5 cm wide; it stretches to roughly 17 cm around a ponytail or a wrist; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the scrunchie take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 8 rounds of the scrunchie, worked as one piece, coming to 512 single crochet, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
