Crochet coaster pattern: one piece, nine rounds, six more stitches each time

A free crochet coaster pattern for a disc ~10 cm across, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in one colour, under an hour's work. Every round is the round before it with six more stitches in it — six into a magic ring, then 12, 18, 24 and on out to 48 — so there is one rule to learn and nothing else changes; round 9 does nothing but slip stitch the last stitch to the first and fasten off. All nine rounds are written out below for the single piece, with the number of stitches it leaves you on printed beside it.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 9 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: one piece, one stitch and one rule — six increases a round, spread evenly, from six stitches out to 48. Nothing is sewn and nothing is stuffed.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the shell coaster be made with a different hook or yarn?

Any smooth cotton double knit works on the 4.0 mm hook. Cotton is what makes this a coaster rather than a mat: wool takes water up and holds on to it.

Is there a gauge to match for the shell coaster?

No stitches-to-the-centimetre figure to match, because nobody has swatched this one; what the pattern asks for instead is a technique: tight enough that the disc lies flat. If it cups, loosen; if it ruffles, tighten.

What hook will the shell coaster need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~10 cm across; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the shell coaster take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 9 rounds of the shell coaster, worked as one piece, coming to 180 single crochet and 42 increases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
