Avocado crochet pattern — three pieces, 22 rounds, one joining round

A free avocado crochet pattern for one half with the pit sitting in it, about 9 cm long, 6 cm across and 3.5 cm deep, worked on a 5.0 mm hook in three colours, around an hour and a half. The skin and the flesh disc open identically for five rounds to thirty stitches; the skin then runs five straight rounds into a shallow cup, and round 11 works those two thirty-stitch edges together through both layers, so the last round is the seam. All 22 rounds are written out across the three pieces, each carrying the count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 22 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

  • 4 render matches the pattern — no image has been compared against its own prompt, so a render showing a piece the rounds do not make would not be caught here. Nothing has counted how many do.
  • 6a recognisability — provenance.recognisability is empty in every pattern, so there is no feature list to check the parts against.
Why it is rated Easy

Easy on the shaping — three small pieces and no decreases outside the pit — but round 11 goes through two layers at once, thirty stitches with the stuffing already inside.

Tension
Gauge is not critical here. Work tight enough that the stuffing cannot show between stitches — a looser hand gives a larger avocado.
Finished size
~9 cm long, ~6 cm across and ~3.5 cm deep
A 4.0 mm hook and the same counts give a smaller half. Use one hook for all three pieces: round 11 pairs thirty stitches of skin with thirty of flesh, and a mismatch in tension shows there.

The flesh

The same opening as the skin, stopped the moment it reaches 30 stitches so it stays flat and lies over the cup like a lid.Count round 5 carefully — the edge has to meet the skin stitch for stitch.

Six notes on the avocado half

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral — nothing to join and nothing to turn.
03The skin should read as an oval rather than a circle. On rounds 2 to 5, push two of each round's increases towards the two ends of the piece and space the rest evenly between them. The stitch count is the same either way, so the app counts these as ordinary increase rounds and draws the finished piece round.
04Round 11 of the skin is the join, not another plain round. Stuff the cup first, sit the flesh disc on top with the pit already tacked to it, line up the two 30-stitch edges, then work those 30 stitches through both layers at once in dark avocado.
05Stuff the skin cup firmly but stop level with the rim — an overfilled cup domes the flesh and the pit will not sit flat.
06The pit is small enough that the stuffing goes in around round 5, before the last decrease round closes it.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

How many pieces make up the avocado half?

Three separate pieces, one written list each. The page writes out 22 rounds in all, the longest piece being the skin at 11 and the shortest the flesh at 5.

How much yarn will the avocado half take?

Three colours, all weight 4, and the pattern asks for dark avocado: ~15 g; pale green: ~10 g; chestnut: scraps.

What hook will the avocado half need, and what is the finished size?

A 5.0 mm hook, US H/8. Finished, it comes out ~9 cm long, ~6 cm across and ~3.5 cm deep; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the avocado half take to crochet?

About one and a half hours. That is 22 rounds across three pieces, coming to 306 single crochet, 54 increases and 6 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
