Chocolate chip cookie crochet pattern — one piece, 13 rounds

This free chocolate chip cookie crochet pattern makes a cookie about 8 cm across and about 2 cm thick, worked on a 4.5 mm hook in two colours, around forty-five minutes of work. It is one continuous spiral from the top of the cookie down to the underside, and the only thing that interrupts it is round 7, worked in back loops only: the count stays at 36 either side of it, but the free front loops leave a ridge all the way round that reads as the baked edge. All 13 rounds are written out below in one piece, with the number of stitches it leaves you on printed beside it.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 13 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: one piece, single crochet only, six rounds out and five rounds back — the only unfamiliar move is working round 7 into the back loops instead of both.

When this piece is doneThe cookie is done.Stuff it lightly and press it flat between your palms before the last round closes, then weave the tail through the final six stitches and pull. Now for the chips: thread the dark chocolate and work three or four short satin stitches side by side, in eight or ten places across the top. Keep them uneven — that is what makes it read as a cookie rather than a coaster.

Five notes on the chocolate chip cookie

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02One piece, worked in a continuous spiral from the top of the cookie down to the underside. Nothing to sew together.
03Round 7 is worked in back loops only. That is still 36 single crochet in and 36 out — the count does not change — but the free front loops leave a ridge all the way round, and that ridge is the crisp baked edge of the cookie.
04The chocolate chips are embroidery, added after the crochet is finished: small clusters of short satin stitches in dark chocolate, worked over the tan fabric and scattered unevenly across the top. Three or four stitches side by side make one chip. Real cookies do not space their chips politely, so neither should you.
05Stuff lightly before round 13 closes. A cookie should stay flat-ish, not turn into a ball — press it between your palms as you go.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the chocolate chip cookie be made with a different hook or yarn?

In DK on a 3.5 mm hook the same thirteen rounds give a smaller cookie. The chips are embroidery, so they scale with whatever you thread the needle with, not with the disc.

How much yarn will the chocolate chip cookie take?

Two colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for cookie tan: 1 skein (about 25 g used); dark chocolate: scraps.

What hook will the chocolate chip cookie need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.5 mm hook, US 7. Finished, it comes out ~8 cm across and about 2 cm thick; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the chocolate chip cookie take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 13 rounds of the chocolate chip cookie, worked as one piece, coming to 198 single crochet, 30 increases and 30 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
