Fried egg crochet pattern — one piece, nine rounds, nothing to sew

This free fried egg crochet pattern makes a flat coaster about 11 cm across at its widest, worked on a 4.0 mm hook in two colours in under an hour. The counts are those of a plain circle — six, twelve, eighteen and on to fifty-four — but from round 5 the six increases are bunched along one side, and that is what makes the white spread into a puddle instead of a ring. All nine rounds are written out in one piece, each carrying the count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 9 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: nine rounds, one piece, and single crochet throughout — where the increases land is a decision rather than a technique, and a wrong one still gives you an egg.

A flat circle that starts yellow, turns white at round five, and stops being a circle after that.Lay it flat to dry and reshape the ripple with your hands. An iron presses the wave out of the white, and the wave is the point.

Eight notes on the fried egg

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02The fabric is plain single crochet all the way through — smooth and even, with no ribbing, clusters or gaps anywhere in it.
03Worked flat in a spiral, nothing to join and nothing to sew. Leave it unstuffed.
04The irregular outline is the whole charm. Each white round adds six increases, and where you put them is yours to choose: bunch four or five of them along one side of the round and spread the rest thinly around the other side. That side flares and ripples into a puddle, the quiet side stays tight, and the egg stops being a circle.
05Keep bunching on roughly the same side each round so the flare builds in one place instead of cancelling itself out.
06The pattern records six increases per round as a total, so the placement lives in this note rather than in the counted stitches — the app will count 6 inc and 42 sc for round 9 wherever you put them.
07The yolk sits dead centre, because a flat spiral grows outward from its middle and the colour change lands on a whole round. A real fried egg's yolk usually sits off to one side; this one does not, and that is a limit of working the whole thing as one piece.
08A light steam block on the finished piece settles the ripple without flattening it out.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the fried egg be made with a different hook or yarn?

Cotton at this hook keeps the fabric flat, which is what a coaster wants. A larger hook only makes a wider egg — the nine rounds and their counts do not change.

How much yarn will the fried egg take?

Two colours, all weight 4, and the pattern asks for yolk yellow: scraps, about 5 g; egg white: about 20 g, well inside one skein.

What hook will the fried egg need, and what is the finished size?

A 4.0 mm hook, US G/6. Finished, it comes out ~11 cm across at the widest, lying flat and unstuffed; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the fried egg take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 9 rounds of the fried egg, worked as one piece, coming to 174 single crochet and 48 increases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
