Crochet watermelon pattern — one piece, 8 rounds written out

This is a free crochet watermelon pattern. The finished slice is about 7.5 cm along the straight fold and about 3.7 cm deep, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in four colours, around forty-five minutes of work. Seven rounds make a flat disc that adds exactly six stitches every round and never runs straight, changing to white at round 6 and green at round 7; then round 8 folds that disc in half and closes the whole curved edge with 21 decreases worked through one stitch of the front layer and one of the back, leaving the fold as the straight side. All 8 rounds are written out below in one piece, each carrying the stitch count it ends on.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 8 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Beginner

Beginner: seven flat disc rounds that each add six stitches, then a single round that folds the disc and decreases through both layers. Nothing is stuffed and nothing is sewn on.

Not critical, but keep the fabric firm — a loose disc ruffles at the rim instead of lying flat. A tighter hand gives a smaller slice and a crisper edge.

In worsted on a 4.0 mm hook the same eight rounds give a larger slice. Keep the seeds in a thinner yarn or embroidery floss, or they sit proud of the red rather than into it.

One disc that grows by six stitches a round, changes colour twice on the way out, then folds in half and seams itself shut.Cotton, so it washes by hand in cool water. Let it dry flat, or the disc takes on the shape of whatever it dried on.

Six notes on the watermelon slice

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral — nothing to join, nothing to turn. Mark the first stitch of every round.
03Rounds 1 to 7 are a flat disc: every round adds exactly 6 stitches and never runs straight, which is what keeps it lying flat. Move the increase one stitch further along each round so no seam ridge forms.
04Round 8 is the fold. Flatten the finished disc in half so the two halves of the rim sit on top of each other, then work each decrease through one stitch of the front layer and one of the back. Twenty-one decreases close the whole curved edge and leave the fold as the straight side.
05The slice is not stuffed. The two layers of fabric give it all the body it needs.
06The seeds are straight stitches embroidered in black over the red, after round 8 — five or six on each face, angled toward the fold. They are not crocheted, so they carry no round of their own.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the watermelon slice be made with a different hook or yarn?

In worsted on a 4.0 mm hook the same eight rounds give a larger slice. Keep the seeds in a thinner yarn or embroidery floss, or they sit proud of the red rather than into it.

How much yarn will the watermelon slice take?

Four colours, all weight 3 (light worsted), and the pattern asks for watermelon red: small amount (~12 g); cream white: scraps; leaf green: scraps; black: scraps.

What hook will the watermelon slice need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~7.5 cm along the straight fold, ~3.7 cm deep; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the watermelon slice take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 8 rounds of the watermelon slice, worked as one piece, coming to 96 single crochet, 36 increases and 21 decreases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
