Crochet carrot pattern — one piece, thirteen counted rounds, nothing to sew

About 12 cm from the tip to the leaf tops, the root itself about 6 cm long: a free crochet carrot pattern, worked on a 3.5 mm hook in two colours in under an hour. Because the round grows by only two, each increase lands one stitch further along than the last on its own, and that drift is what keeps the cone from setting up a seam ridge or a twist. All thirteen rounds are written out in one piece, each carrying the count it ends on; the green top is a bundle of chained strands pulled down through the open shoulder, so it has no rounds of its own.

Maths verified, not yet made. Every one of the 13 rounds was checked against the round before it by machine — the counts, the increases and the decreases all add up. What nobody can promise you yet is how it sits in the hand. How we check

Why it is rated Easy

Easy in stitches, with one thing to watch: round 13 is worked in back loops only, and the front loops it leaves free are the ridge the leaf bundle sits against.

Tension
Tight enough that no stuffing shows between the stitches. Exact gauge is not critical — a looser hand gives a bigger carrot, and the proportions hold either way.
Finished size
~12 cm from the tip to the leaf tops — the root itself is ~6 cm long and ~3 cm across the shoulder
A 4.0 mm hook and worsted give a bigger carrot on the same thirteen rounds. Work the leaf strands in the same weight as the root either way, or the bundle will not fill an eighteen-stitch opening.

How to make the carrot

Seven notes on the carrot

Read them
01An original Crochet Genie design.
02Worked in a continuous spiral, so there is nothing to join and nothing to turn. Mark the first stitch of every round.
03Two increases per round build the taper. Because the round grows by two each time, each increase lands one stitch further along than the last on its own — that drift is what keeps the cone from forming a seam ridge or twisting.
04Round 13 is worked in back loops only. It is still 18 single crochet in and 18 single crochet out, so the counting screen shows an ordinary straight round; back loops only change where the hook goes. The free front loops leave a crisp ridge at the shoulder for the leaves to sit against.
05Stuff firmly from the tip upward as you work rounds 11 and 12. Once the shoulder is done the tip is too narrow to reach, and an understuffed tip lets the cone fold.
06The leaves are not crocheted pieces to sew on. With green yarn, chain 11, then slip stitch back down all eleven chains to make one stiff strand. Without cutting the yarn, repeat nine more times so ten strands hang from a single working loop. Cut, draw the bundle down through the open top of the root, and secure the tail inside against the back-loop ridge. Nothing is sewn.
07Trim the strand tips level once the bundle is anchored — the leaves read better a little uneven than perfectly matched.

Four questions this pattern answers

Not questions anybody asked. Each one is written from this pattern's own record, and every answer is read off the fields it names.

Can the carrot be made with a different hook or yarn?

A 4.0 mm hook and worsted give a bigger carrot on the same thirteen rounds. Work the leaf strands in the same weight as the root either way, or the bundle will not fill an eighteen-stitch opening.

How much yarn will the carrot take?

Two colours, all weight 4 (worsted), and the pattern asks for carrot orange: 1 skein, well under half used; leaf green: scraps, about 3 m.

What hook will the carrot need, and what is the finished size?

A 3.5 mm hook, US E/4. Finished, it comes out ~12 cm from the tip to the leaf tops — the root itself is ~6 cm long and ~3 cm across the shoulder; the leading tilde is there because that came off the stitch counts rather than a tape measure.

How long will the carrot take to crochet?

About three quarters of an hour. That is 13 rounds of the carrot, worked as one piece, coming to 168 single crochet and 12 increases, and the hours are an estimate rather than a timing of anybody making it.
